Has anyone else experienced this?

I took my truck to the dealer a few days ago. They performed the auto park recall, among a few other recalls I need to have done.

Today the truck shifted to park by itself while I was driving. It happened twice today. First time I was backing up our of a parking spot, and the second time I was in drive going about 40mpg, and the transmission shifted to park by itself. I eventually came to a stop and had to restart the engine to be able to put it bank in drive.

Any idea what this is? Pretty scary stuff. I tried finding more info online but couldnt find much. I did see that this has also happened to some jeep guys with the Grand Cherokee.

Also, this has never happened before I took it to the dealer. Wishing now I never went to get that recall. Any help is greatly appreciated

Sounds like your "shifter" needs service. To be more exact, I believe is called the "Transmission Shifter Module and Valve Body". I am by no means stating that is your issue.

Definitely get your rig to the dealer.

If you vehicle is still under the factory warranty see if this is covered.

I do believe there was a similar issue to this not to long ago but instead of shifting to park, the vehicles were shifting to drive/reverse. If memory serves there was a recall. Something else to look into.

Good luck!!

I've heard of it happening while backing up.

Did you open your door while you backing up?

But never on the highway

No I didnt. Both times I had to restart the engine in order to put it back in drive. The doors never opened

Thanks I'm going to the dealer first thing tomorrow morning. I'll update the thread once I find out what it is

Your truck went in to park at 40mph? Did you come screeching to a halt? That sounds horrible.

I remember reading on here that the auto park recall was "supposed" to only put it in park if under a certain mph. So for example if the truck thinks a door sensor was open or something it's still not supposed to trigger the auto park at 40mph.

...but no idea if that's even true

No it didn't come to a sudden stop. I just lost power and gradually came to a stop. I had to restart the engine on order to put it back in Drive.

I just got back from the dealership. Obviously they couldn't replicate the problem and there are no error codes, so they have no idea what it was. I'm going to wait until it happens again, and take a video of it while its happening, and then take it back and leave it there until they fix it.

This is very frustrating and now in left wondering when and if this will happen again.
Luckily this time I was on local road and was able to pull over, but what ahhpens of I'm on a highway and it happens again?

Hi Lamar, I took the truck back to the dealer but they were not able to duplicate the problem and there were no error codes. They couldnt do anything. I'm waiting when/if this happens again so I can document it with a video while its happening.

I'm not sure what else to do at this point

Update, it happened again. I was driving around 30mph, and the truck turned off. I was able to catch the message on the dash this time. It said "shift to P", and then it said " Shifter autocorrect active". I know the autocorrect is engaged when you turn the truck off without shifting to P.

I'm starting to wonder of this may be a power issue and not a transmission issue.

Any thoughts anyone?

I'd park it at the dealership and not except it back till it is fixed. That is a SAFETY issue. If your driving on a freeway and it happens your going to get run over. Sorry I don't have any diagnosis for you.

These trucks nowadays act like they have a mind of their own because they do have a mind of their own. Their brain is the ECU. Throw in a little "Adaptive Driving", which is just a crude form of artificial intelligence, and eventually, you the driver, are going to get a decision Overruled. You want to take the family to town? Nope. The truck says that you're going to stop and park for a while.

My Wrangler and Mustang have manual 6 speeds (and the lowest factory gears available). I can shift my own gears. I can parallel park. I can back a trailer. I can drive in snow.

I'm very reluctant to buy a new vehicle because of horror stories like the OP has told.

BTW my sister's new Toyota with Lane Departure bs will ask her if she needs a cup of coffee if it goes off their predetermined number of times. Really? A car suggesting you get a cup of coffee? See where we're headed? Where's it going to end?

I'm creating a new thread since I think the title on this thread is not necessarily what's happening
