New Diesel

So I boutght a 26 foot tt last week and had a 2014 ram 1500 express 5.7 which was rated at 8500lbs pulling. Needless to say it was terrible. The truck got 5 mpg and could not go faster than 60 mph. I even bought the 4 point sway wdh and so decided to buy the diesel. Maybe a little over kill for a 6500lbs camper but I couldn't be happier.

Nice truck. I did the same thing, I quickly got tired of my 1500 constantly changing gears, revving to high hell to maintain speed and getting about 7mpg towing my trailer across the pass. I sold it and got my 2500, it doesn't even flinch when going up the pass, all while getting about 12mpg.

I sometimes pull a trailer that weighs about 7k lbs with my 1500. It pulls ok but it's heavy and I know it's there. MPG is about 8 usually. But I also don't live in Idaho! I am now looking at the 3500's because who wants to limit what toys they have based off of what the truck can pull? I'm looking at boats for next year.

Anyhow, being in Idaho did you happen to buy from Dennis Dillon Dodge? They seem to have great prices. If so can you speak about it?

I just sold my camper last month because it was pushing the limits of my 2006 Mega Cab with the 5.7 and I wanted something a little smaller. Trailer was just over 7k loaded. Sucked pulling through the hills. But, in my infinite wisdom, 2 days after selling the camper I signed the papers for my (new to me) 2013 2500 with the 6.7. This thing would have pulled that camper like Ike it wasn't even there. Could work out for the better though, now I'm looking at 5'ers. ;-)

Hemis are essentially balanced and blue printed engines from the factory like we used to do years ago. Better though . Running at higher rpm doesn't bother them at all, and they're better for it. They run cleaner when they run at higher rpm.

But in all honesty people aren't buying half ton trucks to pull, they're buying trucks to replace cars. There's a distinct payoff. My dad always told me, "You can buy a truck to get great gas mileage or you can buy one meant to pull, but you really can't get both." After a number of engine/gearing/model combos I have to agree. If your 1500 was behaving like that it wasn't properly set up to pull.

That's why the ram HD trucks are so great, they actually do have some moderate success doing both. Now, since I have several duallys for my business I'll never use anything else for towing. But I do miss the luxurious ride of the 2500.

Truck below is one of our 15s, 4.10 gears, that's a custom cyclone we delivered to an end user and tipped the scales at 19,830lbs. Recorded 13.8mpg average over roughly 1,400 miles.

Be careful with the 5'ers. make sure you look at pin weight. a lot of 5'ers climb up the max load weight of a 2500 in a hurry.
