Had a whole bunch wrong with the truck including failed lifter and worn lobe on cam shaft. Decided to take the job head on and I'm at a point where I have a concern with the new VVT sprocket (cam phaser)

Used melling OEM cam (non mds), deleted the MDS with kit and melling timing kit Including the VVT sprocket(amoungst many other parts). Prior to buttoning everything up, I hand cranked the engine to make sure there was no binding with the rods/valves etc. All works well and moves as it should but the concern is every revolution the VVT sprocket makes a "pinging" sound. Very similiar to hitting the housing of the vvt with a fork. It sounds like a spring inside is unwinding hitting the housing. Concerned, I put the original vvt on to confirm sound and makes a completely different sound that's not all that loud (260k kms). Finding this new sound odd I ordered a new melling VVT sprocket, to find out it's making this same pinging sound. Called Melling tech support who wasn't helpful at all as they didn't know what I was talking about. My question is, does a new unoiled VVT sprocket make a very obvious sound when being rotated by hand (timing chain is on and with tension). Also torqued to 72lbs. I find it odd that 2 new VVR sprockets made the same sound so the chances of having two failed parts is slim... right? Thinking this sound is normal I started putting things back together but now I'm loosing some sleep on this issue. Can anyone confirm this noise and whether it's normal? I don't know much about the phaser and how it works but I can't imagine oil in it would rid me of this sound.

Bonus question: deleting the mds solenoids and keeping the VVT sprocket, I had to keep the wiring harness for the mds solenoids on to keep VVT active. To prevent corrosion and brittle clips in the future, I filled the solenoid clips on the harness with a rtv heat silicone. Is there anything wrong with this, other than the wasted rtv? I'm guessing most just left them laying ontop of the block?

Thanks for any advice and knowledge on this issue.

Thanks for your help.

Easy enough to find out, pull the phazer back off, chuck it in a bucket of oil for 20 minutes, then reinstall it,if it still makes noise,i'd go get a new OEM one,and use it instead.

I have the same exact problem. OP, was there any resolution to this? Anyone else know? I would think this was either super bad luck, or completely normal with an unoiled VVT phaser.

Edit: the noise went away after soaking roughly 1/2 hr in oil. I've rotated the crank/cam a bunch without hearing anything funky, so we should be good. Starting and running will prove things without a doubt of course.

Sounds like you need a better cam and lock it out ;)

The OP hasn't been here in a little over a year. He made the 1 post and then disappeared shortly afterwards

Just fyi I'm completely fine with the cam I have, and the operation of the engine with VVT working. I have no intention of ripping out a good cam with the associated parts and labor from this particular engine. Plenty of performance for my needs! Anyways, hopefully this answers the question about what someone new to this might encounter when installing a new and unoiled VVT phaser. OP if you come across this later, thanks for asking the question!
