I just did my first oil change on my '15 Limited on Saturday. First off, I must say that the air suspension is REALLY nice for changing oil. Just put it in Offroad 2 and have all the room to work that you need.

Second though, I really want to punch the Chrysler factory workers in the face, as it was abundantly clear that they didn't use any oil on the gasket at all and torqued it with a 4 foot cheater bar. There's really no excuse for making me nearly throw my back out trying to get the stock filter off.

So word to the wise, if you change your own oil the first time, get a filter wrench(if you can get it on with the terrible location of the filter) and a cheater bar. I had to use a pipe wrench, and even then it wasn't easy.

Mine was so tight my filter wrench started to collapse the body of the filter. The filter socket that I used kept flexing and popping instead of gripping the filter. Now, it is made of plastic (they started producing metal ones, which I still have to upgrade to) but it has never slipped on the filters that I install myself.

Insane :favorites13:

Just about every manufacture brand has their new engine oil filters installed dry on the gasket. FCA is not unique in this regard.

Very True... All of my oil changes on new vehicles end up being like this. My RAM's was just memorable since the filter was not in an easy position to get the filter wrench into. That and I don't think I have ever started crushing the filter when trying to turn it LOL.

I have had to run a screw driver through one before to get it off, and I put the damn thing on there. It was on a 350 I rebuilt my guess is it has to do with the fact of putting a filter on cold then the heating and cooling of the engine block through the break in puts a pretty tight grip on the threads. I've never had a problem of getting a filter off until that one but then again I change my oil warm not cold.

I've had the dealer do my first two oil changes since they were free, but hope they haven't torqued it too bad once I get into doing them.

My 2009 Suzuki outboard wouldn't come off when I did the first oil change at the end of 2009. I spiked it with a large screwdriver and finally got it off. Common problem with first oil changes on engines.

I guess I've been lucky, no problem getting the filter off with a band wrench.

It has been a couple months but I got mine off with a set of filter pliers. Whenever I use them I can count on crushing the filter slightly. In reality a filter shouldn't be easy to change by hand. If you really pay attention to how the filter says to tighten it you will realize that most aren't quite tight enough according to spec. Most people go by the if its as tight as I can get it by hand and it doesn't leak then its good.

I have seen filters on large generator engines(1,000+ hp) vibrate loose from not being tightened properly. We have to use a strap wrench every time to remove them.

The filter on my truck was really stuck. First I used a strap wrench and it began to collapse the filter housing without budging. I then tried the filter wrench but the housing was compromised already. That is when I resorted to the tried and true hammer and screwdriver method. Even then I ended up with a filter that was ripped to shreds before it came off.

I assume this system is similar to semi air ride and if an air bag/cylinder what ever it has pops, it could come down fast on top of you. Especially since its aired up to raise the truck its under more pressure.

I just look at it as a right of passage that the first new filter change is going to be a ***** and plan accordingly. Luckily my 6.4 factory filter spun off with little grief. I did have a then new 2004 Ranger factory installed oil filter that need two bears and forest ranger worth of strength to remove it.
