Just did my first oil change and all I have to say is what in the sam hell were they thinking with that oil filter placement! Even using a big zip lock bag over the filter it was a mess. By far the worst oil filter placement I've ever seen on a vehicle and I've owned over 20 vehicles! Rant over.

I've used this one to let it drain elsewhere and not on the axle or power steering unit. It's moldable, it cleans easily, and is low cost.

It's a reach. But lot of cars require some contortion to remove the filter. Kind of the nature of the beast (shrug)

I'm not sure what the dealer uses for this issue...
After doing the math it's only saving me about $25 to buy the stuff and do it myself vs what my dealer charges me...
Plus I get my heavy 35" 10plys rotated every oil change and I'm too old to shlep those things around...

I hear ya. But I enjoy any chance to get my hands on my vehicles. But the filter on this one makes it very tempting to bring it to the dealer. Not going to do it though. I just don't trust anyone else working on my vehicles if I can do it myself. Then I know it was done right.

I’ve learned to get the oil draining and just it let drain. The longer the drain time the better. Cold engine and oil makes an unpleasant job a little more tolerable.

The ziplock trick is about the best way I’ve found to handle the filter. One time I was able to position the form a funnel doohickey to direct the oil filter drain away from me and the truck and into a drain pan. Other attempts have not been as successful.

I also run the truck up on ramps to make the job a little easier and somewhat more pleasant. About the only time I run 4 wheel drive .

Filter relocation is the best option as long as it can be done with the proper plumbing so oil pressure isn’t reduced very much.

Oil on suspension never bothered me one bit, some guys pay for that. Try a filter relocation.
yeah me neither but I don’t enjoy it running down my arm lol. I’m sure the subsequent oil changes will be easier. all vehicles have their quirks. My daughter’s 2001 es300 the filter is directly under the front cat and the cat stays hot forever. You’re almost guaranteed to get burned.

yeah ive looked into the filter relocation. I heard mixed reviews and dont want to risk leaks. I think I'll just tough it out twice a year. maybe look into one of those udder things or a flexible funnel.

Ive done the ZipLoc trick a few times, but my issue is getting the bag back out with the filter inside and full of warm-ish oil. Maybe because I insist on using the larger filter size even though I have a truck with electric steering?

I still end up with some dribbling down the steering rack.

Havent looked at what it will take for my son's truck (5th gen), I know it uses a different filter though.

Same messy chit. Wat I don’t like is giving the eps box an oil wash. That system does have a history of some issues. Also rather use shampoo than motor oil to wash hair.

Use good quality hoses and you shouldn't have any leaks,it's the guys that cheap out on hoses that have leaks. Pretty well every piece of farm implement uses hoses to run cylinders etc.,and they generally operate in the 2,000+ psi range.
Over the road semi trucks with diesals have been using remote filters pretty well since they came on the scene.
City people that have never worked with hyd hoses worry more about leaks then any farm kid does, that grew up with high pressure hoses.City kids listen to the internet to much :Big Laugh:The hemi's oiling system operates at roughly 70 psi,and even if you have a high volumn pump you might see 90 psi at most, decent hoses will handle that all day long and never leak.If you want good hoses,go to your local farm implement dealer and they can make up anything you want.

I have the same issue with the ziploc slipping, I started covering steering rack with plastic or tinfoil to keep it from dripping on the rack.
I am going to check out the udder mentioned above before my next change.

Not a Ram pickup but an example of a weird oil filter location from the factory.
Drives oil change guys crazy, playing the "WTF is the oil filter game" and I have to tell them where it is every time.

I have to admit it's really easy to get to.... And really easy to make a huge mess while I'm at it.

I use the heavy duty aluminum foil to wrap the rack . I have found stabbing a hole in the lower part of the filter ,then letting it drain for a few minutes is a big help mess wise.
I also
keep some bath towels that have been ripped into smaller rags to wipe any spills , then wipe down the oil pan.

I don’t have a lot of miles , just turned 30,015 yesterday. 2014 purchased in Dec of 14.

So it is only a pain once a year, sometimes it may get a second change.

But it is easier on the wallet , with that high dollar 10w30 Redline oil.

I have been pondering a remote location, however with so few changes , It is hard to justify the cost.
