Hi I have a 2018 ram big horn and I have no power steering. I checked the fuses and did a battery test. Seems like the battery is fine. It came was 12.3 Anyone have suggestions on simple things to check before I take it to the dealer.

Not really...beyond what you did. Battery LOAD test should be essential. Unhook battery cables (tie together) over night is a cheap thing to try. Maybe check connectors near the rack. Fuses..up by the battery, unless those are what you checked.

Consider doing a forum or google (& youtube) search on the subject. It's been talked to death and it usually comes down to needing a new (expensive) EPS unit, which takes forever to get. It might be a faster way to get the info you seek

Cheers

You might want to review this thread first.

This guy was lucky enough to replace a broken EPS belt at minimal cost and effort. It sounds like verifying the belt condition is a simple task.

I've read stories of dealers quoting $3500 to replace the EPS where the belt was finally replaced for about $50 to resolve the problem.

Techinically your battery is toast at 12.3 volts,it should be 12.6 to 13.2 at rest to be a good battery. As stated do a battery load test with one of these.

The OP lives in Canadastan and strangely enough (today), Amazon.ca. is the cheapest price.

Princess Auto must have flipped their wig because they have the most expensive price @ $80.

Hey Princess, if Amazon.ca sells for less than half of your price, you must be out to lunch.

You're most welcome.

Having your battery load tested would be a better idea. We prefer to test and diagnose versus fire a parts canon.

If you don't want to buy a load tester, most auto parts stores will test for no charge.

Unfortunately, most will have a digital tester which are prone to false positives.

And they can usually do an alternator test at the same time too (at no cost).... also not a bad idea.

I have had good luck with Walmart batteries. I try to get their top of the line ones. They are made by a reputable manufacturer.

Not too surprising to use Walmart for batteries.

The last time I looked for an AGM battery, the replacement guarantee at Costco was leaps and bounds above anywhere else.

BTW, you quoted my posted links for battery load testers, not batteries, just sayin. LOL

So we need a little more info. Do you have powersteering for a quarter turn and then lose it to no power . Mine would get better when I went through the car wash and then start all over and be hit or miss. It was my steering knuckle at $1800 at dealer.

What is you voltage with motor running? should be low /mid 14 Volts.
I would think power steering should still work at 12v, but I have never worked on these electric PS systems. If its shot , I would be looking inside just to see that the hell. Sounds like a belt is cheap if you can get them apart.
Re battery tester, Canadian tire flier just came , and they have 10.oo off

I’m guessing that warranty that you saw at Costco was some time ago ? Unless something has changed recently Costco is about as bad a warranty as there is . 3 year prorated the minute you buy one . As far as the Walmart Everstart AGM’s , they are 4 year free replacement. Just bought a pair . Prior to that at Walmart their standard lead acid battery was 3 year free replacement 2 year prorated. I think they are now just 3 year free replacement.

Costco as you are saying was leaps , and bounds above anyone on warranty . I don’t remember what that warranty was . Last time I bought a battery from Costco they were a pair of Kirkland RV batteries. I believe now they are Interstate , as said with just the 3 year which is prorated from the start of the sale , I’m not sure anyone had a worse warranty than that .

It appears that there may now be a difference between the Costco battery warranty in the US & Canada.

IIRC, they once had the same warranty but now it appears better up here. We have Energizer AGM up here instead of Interstate in the US.

Our automotive AGM batteries have a 5-year full refund, followed by a pro-rated warranty.

Costco Energizer warranty.jpg

The EverStart price at Walmart ($230) up here, is $110 less than the Energizer at Costco ($340).

I was able to capture & magnify a battery picture from Walmart.ca and it appears we get a 3-year full replacement, followed by 2 years pro-rated. The fools don't mention the warranty anywhere I looked.

I'd pay the extra $100 for the longer replacement warranty at Costco.

Totally different than the US , my apologies, I didn’t realize you were in Canada . My bad .

As said the Everstart Platinum AGM is 4 years free replacement, beyond that nothing here in the US . They are $179.84 And as said Costco here is terrible, just the 3 year prorated. I buy all my batteries at Walmart , price warranty about as good as any here . They no longer have that 3 year , 2 year prorate on their regular lead acid as said just the 3 year now .

No worries, it's difficult to keep up with how we're being gouged by the big retailers and then the difference between our countries.

I'm only 45 minutes from a Walmart in Ogdensburg, NY but, given the current $ exchange rate, I would still spend a few $ more for the better Energizer AGM warranty at the local Costco.
