Quick question, i might build my own ram 1500 to purchase, but what is the point of the no-spin differential? For $350, whats the reason why somebody may want one?

Better traction/power to both rear wheels instead of one.

this will be my daily driver with minor trailering, about 10-15 times a year ( 3000lbs including trailer ). Small loads of 500 lbs or so a couple times a week...... Worth it?

Not trying to be cheap, just dont know if i need it......

Limited slip diff is nice to have if you have 2wd only and you get snow on the ground. Otherwise an open diff will function just fine, especially with a load in the vehicle. If you get cheap tires, run the truck empty and like to throttle it quickly off the line then an LSD will better suit your driving style. I have an open diff in my 4x4 quad cab with the HEMI and to be frank, the HEMI doesn't come on strong until 2500rpm and even in 2wd in slush/light snow conditions I have no problem getting around with nothing in the bed providing I keep RPM under 2000rpm while accelerating. Once I hit 2200rpm or so the engine starts to wake up and traction becomes a problem.

An LSD is also a necessity if you plan to off-road the truck. Ultimately it's a personal decision and even on relatively dry yet uneven light trails I went on last fall I had no problems even in 2wd.

To add, it's been cold and raining this past week. The roads are slick, but I can accelerate to 3000rpm from a stop and all I get is a little chirp from the rear and I'm off. No traction issues. If there was ice it would be a different story, but if I need to I can switch to 4wd to get moving.

yea i wish my truck had a LSD,

im not sure how the other guy is accelerating under 2200rpm or whatever

but if i accelerate from a dead stop with anything more then 1/4 throttle, it spins the rear tires like crazy

i find the truck is more difficult to drive without the LSD, for example on local streets and the cars are backed up beyond the light, ill take a shortcut through neighborhood streets, but i have to get from 0-35 pretty quickly to beat those lining up with the traffic light - here is a scenario where i actually want to accelerate fast from a stop and i cant because i spin up the tires so much......

I couldn't imagine my truck with out a lsd I have enough trouble with wet traction as it is. Spend $350 now or $1000 later when changeing it.

Even 4wd with LSD in the rear is more effective. I wouldn't pass on a truck that didn't have it if it was a decent deal, but I wouldn't actually order one without it.

After this winter, I'm on the fence with it. Like NYCruiser said, I wouldn't pass on deal just because it didn't have LSD, but I probably wouldn't order a truck without it either. Since I wait until the end of the year, end of the month, during the holidays to get the mega deals, I'm at the mercy of what's on the 6 local RAM dealership lots. That's why my current Sport has the open differential. I was a little concerned about how it would drive here in snowy Buffalo, NY since I just came from a 2013 F150 with not only LSD but electronic locking rear differential. Honestly, the RAM handles a lot better. When taking a corner (or turns) with the LSD the ass end would kick out in a second on you.....fun when you're expecting it, not so much when you aren't. With my RAM with the open differential, I have to try like hell to get the ass end to kick out. When I'm worried about traction, I just put it in 4wd. Trust me when I say I've been through some REALLY deep snow here in Buffalo. The open differential has not been a problem for me.

I must drive like an old lady because open dif or lsd unless there is snow or ice I would never break traction everyday driving. Lsd will always go sideways easier intentional or accidental. I ordered my truck with lsd because when I do need traction I want all I can get. What's 350 bucks, 1/2 a payment? Treat yourself, your worth it.

1 wheel peel is hilarious. You never know if it will be wet or sandy when pulling a trailer, why not spend the $350? It costs many times that to add an LSD after the fact.

To be clear, "anti-spin differential" = "limited slip differential" for the purposes of this comment.

Here's the best, day day reason to get an LSD: unprotected left turns on busy intersections.

W/O the LSD, all that HEMI power just goes into smoking the left tire - it doesn't matter if you're making 410 ft-lbs or 205 ft-lbs of torque . . . you just put your foot down and the truck barely moves. Obviously the same is true for right turns - try to pull out of a parking lot into traffic very quickly and you'll experience the same thing.

W/ the LSD, the inside tire chirps and you scoot across that dangerous intersection, pronto.

The factory LSD is a beast of a unit - it needs a little bit of LSD additive when you change the diff fluid but otherwise is maintenance free (according to the manual; others here may disagree). It also works even at 75% throttle from a stop.

As others have mentioned, $350 is an absolute steal. Check out the LSD options on cars and you'll see that that they routinely charge $1K or more for these puppies (looking at you, BMW and Infiniti) or save them for their highest end models (BMW). On the aftermarket, all but the absolute ********* LSDs are like $400 for the part alone, not to mention installation labor and headaches (welded ring gear, BMW?).

Do yourself a favor before deciding: try to do a 50% throttle acceleration in a tight (stay in the same lane) turn as if you were pulling across a busy intersection with an open differential truck. Then try it with the LSD. You'll be sold.

My factory LSD sucks.........

Its fine when turning left and getting on throttle. Turning right............WELL it is junk...even light throttle blows the right rear off at will, and thats with 305/22 tires.
Straight line its fine...usually.
I gotta get it in to the dealer I think.:roflsquared:

For those of you that are stuck with an open diff, we currently have the OEM Limited Slip unit on sale for only $499 with free shipping. This exact unit is $774 at the dealership, so this is a heck of a deal. Mopar only let us buy so many at this price though, so they will be going back to normal once our current inventory is gone.

$350 is dirt cheap. I agree with everything else that's been said, but I will add, get it for piece of mind, bragging rights, and when you sell the truck, you'll get all of the money back, if not more. If you look at it like that, it costs you nothing. If it keeps you out of trouble just once, it helped pay for itself. I wouldn't have a truck without one. I had trucks without, and never again an open!

HI noupf,

Spend the $350 it is well worth it. If the new truck yo are looking at doesn't have tell the dealer to install it if they want to sell you the truck. They will get it put in. It should not cost you any more than having it ordered since they are going to be taking the brand new carrier that is already in the truck and replacing it with the LSD unit.

Able to ship to Canada?

If you can ship it to an American address, even a UPS store over the boarder, ship it there and drive over and get it. You will save huge even paying at the boarder. You pay tax on the value at the boarder. I buy almost all my parts this way, have for years.
