ok, so I've been filling up with 87 and decided to go with a full tank of 89 after this post to test it out... It is a noticeable difference... Smoother engine and slightly better performance. It's not just me, my wife and brother felt it too and they didn't know I had switched octane. 89 from now on

I run 93 on mine, with a tune and have no knock. But when I lived in Southern California I ran 89 in this truck with a tune. The truck runs MUCH better on 93. Price per gallon on 93 here in Central Tx is ~ $2.65. Perhaps I am the outlier, but I prefer and am willing to pay for the 93, no doubt about it.

I live in Jersey now... Used to have some of the best gas prices now some of the highest. 2.65 for 87 now

Run 87 since new without issue. Few times I've had to fill with 89 I notice no difference. Is my timing being reduced, very well could be, but runs smooth with 58k on the clock now. Maybe it is the New Jersey WAWA gas :)

keep in mind the octane rating is done by average so best practice is to go up one level from recommended

Yes, the State of New Jersey has decided the population of the State is too stupid to pump our own gas. I must say however when the temps are very low and the wind is blowing I don't so much mind being considered "stupid". :)

I just turned 14k on my truck today. I had been running 89 since I thought it was making a difference. I have not noticed a difference and I will run 87 through it for a few more fill ups and then back to 89 for a few fill ups just to see. Kinda think it wont make a difference...except in my walletm

That's not true, the octane rating is a by standards guaranteed minimum.
That means a 87 octane gas can be a 88 octane gas but not a 86 octane gas

the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI), and often written on pumps as (R+M)/2.

Aaah, now I understand what you want to say with "average"

But, be sure - in the manual will never ever be "87 Octane is acceptable" if it would harm the motor only a tiny bit.
For (my and the most others) daily ride with an empty truck to work and back, without hauling, without higher speed (the stock ram is limited and don't run faster than only 170km/h - 105mph, that's very slow and not what I call high speed) the 87 octane is good enough. For my daily ride in the city I save my 10 Can$ per filling. Maybe I loose couple % in power but the Hemi have still way enough power. When I want a sooo much a faster truck, I can maybe loose 20lbs at my belly, that helps too :):)

I tried the 89 octane gas for some fillings and I don't note that I need more or less gas than with the 87 octane. All was the same, but not for my wallet.
But how I said - if I would haul, maybe heavier stuff, maybe hill up and down and at the Highway, than I would use 89 octane Gas.
More octane than 89 octane is wasted and burned money. Better sent the money to me - I will say some magic spells for your motor, that works as well :peace:

I runs me 94, mind you I am not stock. When stock ran 87/89 and did not see/feel a difference. Happy trails.

If I go to Costco I get the 91 if another station it is 89 and during the spring , summer , and fall usually once a week the bed is loaded err over loaded in weight . I have never heard nor even felt the slightest ping, hesitation , or performance loss even for on ramps , the brakes on the other hand usually not very happy with me
