Ok folks. I sincerely apologize if this has been discussed.

I am possibly getting wheels for my 2017 Ram 1500 and it’s a smoking deal. Hard to say no. The only thing I’m worried about is the wheels are 20x9 with an offset of -12. I have 275/60/20 duratracs. I’m not worried about fitment on the wheel, however, I am worried about chewing up my paint with road debris flinging up.

I have noticed a trend in my area and online that people ride with insane offsets and albeit some look nice some just look plain stupid with almost all the tries surface past the fenders.

I don’t mind an inch or two but not if I’m gonna need to paint the side of my truck after 6 months. With so many guys with aggressive offsets I’m hoping you guys can chime in and give me the honest truth on this subject.

I REALLY wanna pull the trigger LOL. I have a bad habit of researching the crap out of something before going ahead ha ha ha. Could be good or bad I suppose. Bad for retailers that have to answer my questions but I don’t trust them 100% like I do you folks so I ask you guys [emoji106]

Fender flares will be your best friend! Get some as soon as you get your wheels mounted!

@Addicted2fishing- I agree with you on the Trend and like yourself don't mind an inch or two sticking out, and I would agree with @Ravjay12 if your wheels only stick out a couple inches then a nice set of fender flares would not only add a cool look IMO, but also cover the couple inches of tire sticking out and saving your paint.

Mine stick out about 1-/12”, and I cringe every time I hear a rock ding off my door. I had a few small dings in the door before I got it, so I can’t tell if they are from the rocks or not

Lot cheaper to repaint then fenders and bedsides.

No I meant they damage the paint with rubbing

Most guys use clear 3m tape where the rubber contacts the paint.

I have 18x9s Badlands with -12mm offset, imo -6mm offset would be about perfect .

I would buy them I have not seen any damage on my truck from rocks, type of tires would matter as well on that matter.

I had some on (Bushwhacker knockoffs) which came with the 3m black rubber edge. Don't make the assumption that alone will suffice. When I replaced my bumpers, I had to remove the flares, and sure enough (after 6 mos) faint rub marks are there. They buffed out, but the dirt that gets caught between the paint and rubber is murder on your finish. Take @JB1's advice, and use the clear bra-type tape. You'll be glad you did.

-12mm isn’t a bad stick out and mostly it’s just the end lugs that are visible. I had -44mm on my hemi, and that looked awesome in my opinion, and as it was a mall crawler anyhow, I really didn’t have troubles with crap flinging up the sides and ruining the paint. I had fender flares at one point but that was due to the local law giving me trouble. To each their own though.

Thanks for the responses folks! Is it just me or do the front seem to stick out more than the back? I’ve noticed that on a lot while looking at pictures

I’ve had 20x12 -44 offset on my truck for almost 2 years. No issues here with paint or anything and my truck is black that shows everything.

You could offset some gator kickbacks also if you dont want to go the fender flare route

I was not so lucky and my truck was still a highway queen at the time. Got me some flares to nip that in the butt.

I also have Toyo street tires so they don’t sling rocks like AT or mud tires.

13C519C8-AA27-4E55-8D60-0341E0CD20B1.jpeg I debated in my head over offset, wanted it to look more aggressive. The wheels I wanted came in zero and +18. Couldnt locate a set with the zero. Went with a basically stock offset. I wanted no more than an inch out with no flares. Extremely happy with result.
