I'm new to diesels and was surprised, no shocked is a better word to see the oil on the dip stick of my new 2018 RAM 2500 at less than 1000 miles was black. I learned this is normal with the new emissions on all the newer diesels. All that sook getting fed back into the combustion chamber. Well, this doesn't seem to me to be a good thing, even if it is normal. I gotta believe the soot in the oil is making it more abrasive causing extra wear. I would think the newer diesels with all that emissions stuff won't last as long as the older diesels without all that. I know that's why so many delete. I don't want to void my warranty, not to mention being illegal in my state, wouldn't pass smog to get registered.

So, I'm gonna install an oil bypass filter. I'm thinking I'll go with a Sinister Diesel Bypass Oil Filter System. Insane Diesel is another option I'm looking at, but quite a bit more expensive. Anyone install an oil bypass system, got any recommendations?

DJ,
Must be your first diesel. It was probably black within a few hundred miles.
Perfectly normal, and not just on new diesels. I think the 2 stroke Detroit 71 series oil turned black as it was coming out of the container on it's way to the crankcase!
Stop looking at your oil! LOL

I just scored an Amsoil bypass off CL for $100. It came with a new filter in the box and I’ll be installing it on my 11’.

The largest expense with bypass is filters, so I would find a system that has easily and cheap filters, and I would stock up on them.

safe bet Frantz has the cheapest oil filters...

it uses toilet paper for the bypass. Never have to buy a 45 dollar bypass filter sound good?

Yeah I looked at the Frantz system, just thought TP should be used elsewhere. I hear they work good, just wasn’t for me.

Finally got my tap in so I could mount it on the frame rail. Also used an oil filter sandwich housing as my ports were to close to get a fitting on.
