So...
The truck is now @ 40 some thousand miles and I just did the 3rd oil change. I know I put in 3 full gallons the last 2 times and only got out about 2 1/3 after even after letting the oil filter drain on the oil collector I use. Any thought?

Are you checking the dip stick in between changes to see if is actually going down or just comparing what you got out?

Did you factor in how much oil was in the oil filter?
On my 2017 with about 45k miles, I have not seen the oil level on the dipstick change even the slightest bit between 15,000 mile oil changes.

Have you worked the engine hard, pulled heavy, etc. ? Stock air filter? High idle time? The CGI engines went to low tension rings, so the potential for oil consumption was on my mind going in. I have been doing 10K OCI's, and have fortunately never had to add between changes.

Alright...
So, I did not check the oil level between fills. I did check it everytime after replacing oil and filters and it comes up to full on the stick.
I do not idle much/any. I drive 40 miles a day all highway, when I pull I pull. 24 foof enclosed trailer 8,000 lbs Sturgis/Daytona from St Louis a couple of times a year.

The only reliable way to see if your truck is using oil is looking at the dipstick. My 2011 CTD has not used a drop of oil in over 83,000 miles, but I change at 5.000 mile intervals, using Shell Rotella T-4 15W40 oil. I know I could probably go further on oil changes but I am old and old school, and old habits are hard to break.

I agree. 5,000 is plenty of miles to put on oil. Yeah, there are 3 gallons of it in there, but it is good preventative medicine to keep that oil cleaner. I can not fathom putting 15,000 miles on engine oil.
