Is Mobil 1 approved by Chrysler (MS-12633) to be used in the Ram 6.4L?

No it is not but many run it anyways regardless in these 6.4's.

My dealer wants 100 bucks to change oil in my 6.4.
I will be doing it myself a friend can get me amsoil for 52 bucks for 7 qts. Not too bad really. I will have dealer rotate my tires for 15 bucks though.

so what would Chrysler do if you had an engine failure and were not using an oil that meets their requirements?

cant they immediately turn down the warranty work?

In theory, they have to prove the oil actually failed and caused the engine failure. In practice, they can get away with a blanket statement that using the non 'recommended" oil is grounds for outright denial of warranty.

Using the recommended oil at the recommended intervals and receipt/records kept minimizes this.

While the "Magnuson Moss Warranty Act" puts the impedes on the vehicle manufacturer to prove a non "recommended" oil actually caused the failure, the reality is this Federal law is not enforced but only through civil action brought by a claimant. So in reality if FCA denies outright without proof that the non recommended oil caused the failure, your only recourse is to retain counsel on your dime and sue FCA using the MMWA as your basis of claim.

Yeah, it is a bit of a pain. If you do a subscription order on Amazon, can get it for about $44 for a six court case. There is also some dealers on Ebay that package a 7 quart kit and MOPAR filter for around $65 delivered.

Might also want to check you RAM dealership parts department. Some actually are pretty competitive on the relabeled Pennzoil they sell under the MOPAR label.

ok ,thank you. I saw the "subscription" on Amazon, just didn't want to get stuck to anything yet. didn't know how long you HAVE to do the subscription for.

and WTH! 6 quart case on amazon? must be that the Challenger takes 6 quarts.

When you setup amazon subscriptions, you can set the interval for renewal in and out by however many months you think you will need it. While a little shady, you can do your first order under the cheaper price subscription plan and then cancel the subscription after your first order arrives. I do not know how many times you could get away with that but just throwing that out there.

As to 6 quart cases, that is pretty standard for many synthetics regardless of brand and weight. So you would need to either pick up an off quart somewhere or order two 6 quart cases and have the off case to fill the next case orders out.

Here is a link to one of the tailored oil change packages. A little pricey at $65 or so shipped but comes with all 7 quarts needed and an OEM filter.

To bad you did not buy your 6.4 before the end of last year. AutoZone was blowing out the Pennzoil Ultra 0w-40 for $2-$4 a quart on clearance around Christmas time. I cleaned all my local AutoZone's out.

When Pennzoil went to GTL or "Gas to Lube" formulation, the Ultra became their Ultra Platinum line. When you find any 0W-40 Ultra laying around, it is just a couple year old stock but still meets the MS-12633 spec you need. I believe even the SKU's between them are the same.
