I the 24 years I worked for Ford Motor as a Diesel Tech. We use to have engine noise on cold starts and low oil pressure. What we found that the problem sometimes was the oil filter (STP). I have been reading the cold engine noise on 5.7 engines because some oil filter do not a bypass valve. Ford FL820 and FL500 have a bypass at the base. So I am going to try a FL500 on my 2012 Ram. What are you all thoughts.

There are plenty of good oil filters out there, I'm going to let the oil expert Burla speak his expertise on them though. Most people use Royal Purple 10-48 or the larger one, which I cant remember the part number for.

i strongly second the rp 20820 filter. my truck sat for 9.5 days straight while i was on vacation. cold start after was perfect. no tick, no loud tapping. nice and smooth. i actually expected that start up to be a little rough. but was pleasantly surprised. i dont recall ever reading about anyone having a bad experience with these filters. have you @Burla? there have been a few with the smaller rp filter. pairing that with redline oil sure doesnt hurt either

we had a couple issues with the 10-48, I don't believe any with the larger filter. They had loose internals, I checked all my 20 and there were no looseness.

To be fair, I have a bias favoring AMSOIL products in general but that said, I have never experienced anything but excellence with Amsoil products. I have personally done a lot of research over a long span of time and find that Amsoil and Royal Purple are indicative of "Top of the Line" irrespective of competitive products that might be in the lineup.

I don’t know how the oil filter can affect the lifters tapping in morning on a cold start. The issue is the thinner oils being used and the tighter clearances built into the engines. The 5.7 recommends 5W 20???? Huh, it runs down from the top of the motor like water after a hot shut off. The 0W-40 does a little better.... Mopar says 100% normal and causes NO wear!? Ok..... my 6.4 never has any knocks on initial start, if I drive it then shut down, restart I get the tick/knocks for a few seconds.... no rhyme or reason. Dealer of course says, normal they all do it.
Hate to be long winded but, wife had a 2011 JGC 5.7 it would tick on start up. Bought a new 2019 5.7 no tick. Did lose the cam and lifters on the 2011 at 105k miles and after the rebuild still ticked on start up....I use Am$oil signature and their premium synthetic fiber filters in all my vehicles and change at recommened times. It’s a conundrum and perhaps **** poor quality control in the Mexican engine plant....

I was looking for videos on the internet this weekend for comparisons on oil filters. It was very enlightening. You should take time and look at some of these. I want comet but in several videos the filters were cut open and the cases and tops were compared including thickness, the anti drain back or lack of, the type of springs that held cartridge up tight against the anti drain back rubber, the thickness and material that the filter media was made of, and the length of the filter media(the longer, the more filter media) and the material the filter media was attached to(the top and bottom) and the the way the ends of the media is is connected. I really learned something. Some of the NEW filters had rust in them when they were cut open. Every one seems to swear by one or the other bet these videos shows what is quality made.

Are KN filters any good?

A lot of people swear by them. They like the nut on the end. I won't touch them. I have ran into two people in the motorcycle community who experienced collapse and rupture.

Some of the filters that tested best were Pure One, Napa Gold, Mobile One, Bosch, several more including some mentioned above.

K&N oil/guase air filters are supposed to be good. I have them in my two motorcycles but stopped using them in my 3 MoPar vehicles. Reason: I don't like messing with the cleaning and re oiling. Yes, they are cheaper in the long run but I have gotten lazy.
