Oil monitoring system? How does it work

Any idea how 2015 ram 1500 oil monitoring system works? Does it gauge oil based on mileage or cleanliness or viscosity?

Also 5w20 is what is recommended I know that but a lot of guys I see are running 5w30 with no issues?? Any insight?

Mileage is the key parameter it tracks.

5W30 won't hurt the engine.

It uses mileage, hours and fuel used as parameters.. long trips on the highway will get you a longer interval than short trips to the store.

i suggest taking a peak at the lengthy synthetic oil thread to find answers about oil and why folks are using what they use. lots of good info.

The oil life monitor uses a lot of parameters to gauge oil life. Mileage, engine hours, how you drive it, ambient temp, fuel usage etc.

It operates in Cascade Mode:
The unit reads a handful of set parameters as well as a few algorithms.
It then gathers all this information & with a type of Vooo Dooo magic formula--->calculates the oil life %.

It is also very similar to GM's oil life monitoring system.

Pretty accurate & efficient.
