But.....one thing I never considered when I purchased my Ram 1500 was my max "payload." You can load up w/tools, supplies, food and people and still tow that trailer safely.
I have a 17' Ram 1500 SLT, 5.7Hemi, Crew Cab, 4x4, short bed, 6-speed, 392gears. Max Tow rating is 10,160lbs. Max payload is 1530lbs. I'm never going to tow 10,000lbs. But it's amazing how fast you can hit your max payload capacity when you have a family of four. I have five year old twins who are only going to get bigger! In terms of tools/supplies; I'd rather have and not need, than to need and not have. Especially if you're taking the family out into the bush. It's the service technician in me! Nothing worse than getting out to the job site and realizing that the one tool you need is sitting at the shop!
I have a Canopy(topper/camper shell), which adds to your payload, which also enables you to pack the back of your truck full! I have a disability. So I have certain items that stay in my truck year round. Tools, rain gear, spare sleeping bag, fresh water, a good reliable jack, 4x4 supplies, etc..... things that I am not comfortable not having. Even on a short road trip. Let a alone a week long camping trip. When I tow, I have to pack as much into the tt as possible. After me, the wife, kids, gear & Canopy were already at approximately 950-1000lbs. in terms of payload. Once I drop 4000lbs. of WDH & tt on the back, I'm definitely pushing the limit of my "payload" capacity! Kicking myself for not getting a Ram 2500.
Definitely won't be getting that lift anytime soon! We live and learn. All about your perspective! Have a good day everybody. Bababooey to you All!
