The locals in Waterton
The day we seen the old Momma and her 2 cubs, there was a young couple from England riding bikes ,and the young gal was freaking out about the bears in the ditch,so i folded the tonnue cover up and threw them and their bikes in the truck and hauled them up to the top of Highwood Pass ,where we were turning around, and they were the most grateful young English couple i'd ever ran into, lol.

I'm a bit north east of you in Alberta, and we have Momma Grizzlies and their cubs wandering around in the ditches once you get into the hills, lol

Yep reasons guns and camping go together lol. All we have in my part of oregon is black bear and cougars. If I lived up there I would have smith 500 on my hip in the woods lol

I used to work in SE Alaska. We saw bears every day. Then they seem normal and there is no need to get all paranoid.
I have bears and mountain lions in my yard at home.

Getting a solid sleeping area was my first priority. Then I focused on what I really needed to do to my truck in order to get to the places I wanted to camp. Trying not to just spend money on cool looking gear and saving up for the stuff that will make your camping/overlanding experience better. I leveled my truck and put 35s under it...Ive done some pretty gnarly trails and camped in some pretty rad places.

I agree that a good bed is important so is heat or a/c depending on where you live. For me and the missus comfort is key otherwise she might not want to go. I am also on a budget now so I build what I want but can’t afford.

That’s the way to do it! My bed area has two drawer pull outs and we use an Amazon 6” memory foam mattress. It’s all used wood and I did it on the cheap and lived with it, taking notes on future improvements for us. I say build something with what you have and tweak accordingly! BUT keep the wifey happy

That’s why I built my own topper lift and rock sliders and spare tire carrier. The Canadian peso and shipping kill. Plus if I don’t like something I can always change it to make it better. An auxiliary fuel tank is next.

Any pictures of your bed setup? I’ve been thinking about building a deck so I can slide plastic bins under for storage and use a foam mattress or air mattress on top of it.

That’s where I started too! I have a cab hight topper so I ended up not having enough head room so I build something a little lower. I have the bed rug so what you see has no sliders or wheels…I just muscle it in and out. Right now I’m using one side for tools, air components, water components, hammocks and chairs. The other side we pack our(family of 5) cloths and camp kitchen items.

That’s awesome. Definitely makes me want to move forward with that deck idea I have. I want to build a slot in it for my Blackstone griddle. Have one side for kitchen. My bed canopy actually leaves quite a bit of room.

No way I could get the missus to sleep in a tent even if it is in the back of the truck. Now that we have used the little diesel heater it’s very cozy in the back. The extension I built makes a world of difference. Now we have a place to put our shoes etc. when we go to bed I can close the door and the diesel heater is outside so it is not very loud. Because we’re heating such a small space I don’t have to run it very high.
