So it seems from what I am tell that the inside of my rear bumper is rusting. Why I say it appears that way is because on the one corner I can see the rust color coming up. With that I want to address this problem now. My plans were going to be use a drill and wire wheel and go to town on the inside of bumper, then primer and paint and a clear.

Questions for you guys is:

1. Are my steps of sanding/primer/paint/clear right?

2. What type of primer do you guys recommend, also paint and clear?

3. How hard is it to take bumper off? Steps?

This does not need to look professional since you would NEVER see it unless bumper is off, but I won't have it look like crap either. Any input I appreciate guys!

I don't know about taking the bumper off for I have never done it. from what I have seen its just a couple of bolts and some wiggling and you should be fine.

I like the idea of the wire wheel for I do the same as well. only thing is you need to be careful with that... using the wire wheel will produce many scratches (the reason it get the rust off) and if you do no seal them properly you will be doing yourself a disservice since you now sped up the process of rusting.

there is a product I believe by lock-tite that is developed specifically to stop the spread of and prevent rust. I think It is called lock-tite extend.

after you wire wheel the bumper, I suggest dousting the bumper in this rust preventative. it is like a paint and can dry to a paintable surface. put it on heavy enough and sand it down. then use primer paint and clear to fully seal the rust out.

if you are looking to do rattle cans, then I have used rustoleum for every application and have had great results with it and would highly recommend it. I am in the process of painting my mirrors and I used rustoleum primer, duplicolor factory match pxr paint, then I used rustoleum crystal clear enamel for clear coat. I need to sand and buff the paint and it'll look really nice.

Edit :Make sure you seal the edge of the bumper or it'll cancel out any prep work you did to prevent rust!

I'm not fully sure how bad the rust is, guessing I have to take bumper off to tell, so if its not too bad I can just use wire brush instead of wheel but will still have to use the lock tite like you mentioned.

I will make sure I clear all edges is that what you mean by seal?

Not sure on yours, but to take my bumper off we had to unbolt the bed and lift it up a little to pull it out

how about the bed liner stuff that comes in a rattle can, I hear that stuff is pretty tough, tougher than paint anyway, might help seal that up and slow down the problem. Just a thought

When I did mine I used a grinder to take it to bare metal then paint it with por-15. It's a tractor paint that totaly stops rust. The. I ordered paint from I think it was automotive touch up by the paint code. When you put it back put nickle washers between the brackets and bumper.

Ok best thing to do is just get some naval jelly. It will convert the rust to something that can be painted over. And it is real easy to apply. Might not even need to remove the bumper if you can easily get to the corners. After the naval jelly use a good etching primer. It will bond to anything that is on the bumper and the steel. After that you can either paint it with regular paint, or like was recommended use the bed liner in a spray can. I suggest the bed liner. Make sure to put several light coats on though, until you have it as thick as you want. Most auto parts stores will have the naval jelly, etching primer and bed liner.

Im a big fan of the wire wheels in a drill. Then if you have the money por-15 works wonders if money is tight one rattle can of self etching primer and either some rubberized undercoat or black spray paint to protect it and it should get you down the road
