Plasti-dip, I think I'm gonna try it.

I've been reading all of the articles on here about plasti-dipping wheels/badges etc., and I think I'm gonna try to do it.

Fro those that have already done it, is it really that easy? Is there anything special I need to do, or any tips you can give me before I start? I know prep is the most important part, what do you use to clean the bades before you start? How do you make sure you just pull off the overspray and not what you want to stay on there? My truck is a lease and don't want to do anything that is going to permanently change this.

I'm going to do the rear badge on my '14 White Express first, since it looks to be the easiest to mask off first.

I used soap and water then a good lint free cloth to dry. If your doing you rear badge you can tape off the tail gate and it won't stick to the badge at all when you peal off. Plasti dip is super easy im going to be doing some plasti dip work next week.

You mean when I go to remove it, it won't stick to the badge correct? Because I think I want it to, lol.

I want to do the wheels on my explorer also, but if this turns out good, I may do them on the truck also.

Check the "what did you do with your 4th gen this week" thread. I put pics up yesterday. I just dipped my badges and rims on the weekend. I just washed everything down with Windex then sprayed alcohol over it and wiped with a microfiber towel. The stuff peels right off. I didn't like the rear badge after my first attempt. Peeled it and it looked brand new. Tape newspaper like 2" away all around the badge to protect your tailgate. Then start spraying. Make sure to cover the badge and around it as well. Let dry. Then when you take the paper off peel the dip around the badge. It shouldn't affect the badge, just doesn't believe me. You have to make sure to over spray the badge to be able to peel around it. Hope this helps lol.

Thanks for the tips, it's the overspray and the fear that it will permanently stick to the badge and I'll have to replace it that really scares me.

It definitely won't be permanent. Took about 9 seconds to peel my first try I wasn't happy with

I think the 2 tone looked pretty cool on the white. It turned out great. I really want to do the wheels too, but I have some pretty back neck problems, so they're gonna have to wait a while.

Some people do the rims on the truck and just put a bag or something behind the rim. I took mine off to rotate them as well. But they were a pita to get back on. (recovering from surgery on both wrists) so I see why you might be hesitant.

That's my issue as well. Might be something to hold off for now. And I think I'm gonna try it on my Explorer first, smaller wheels, lol.

Once you try plasti dip it's hard to stop. I know I'm addicted.

With all the colors and different finishes, there is no end to what you can do.

WOW, that is awesome looking!! I was just on this site, www.dipyourcar.com, he does vids on youtube.

My favorite color is lime green, and I see it comes in that. I may do all the emblems in that color for something completely out of control.

It's not permanent. If you don't like it or mess up just peel it off. Only thing I can add is do about 5-6 light (even) coats before spraying the thicker coats. Make sure to wait for each coat to dry before applying the next. I used blue painters tape to mask the area around my rear badge. Then newspaper for the rest of the tailgate. Remember you will have overspray. I just covered my entire tailgate so I wouldn't have to deal with any overspray. I didn't have to deal with any wind because I painted the badge in my garage. I plan to mask everything off, but also saw that the overspray isn't that hard to remove. The guy in the video used a micro fiber towel to just wipe it away and his fingers for stubborn spots.

Goo gone and a cloth wipes up over spray like it was nothing. No elbow grease required.

Yeah, It's fun stuff. I've done my grill, wheels, rear badge, little stuff on the inside. All kinds of stuff around the house. My floor jack handle etc..

It is great stuff. I had my wheels, steps done. Currently have grill and badges done. Along w the chrome border around shifter. My wife's jeep has hood, wheels and badges all done also. Just go to dipyourcar.com and check those forums out for any questions

Yup, my grills been painted about 6 months. Now rock chips will damage it of course.

To be honest thought. I plan on taking it off the grill and just going with a black mesh grill.
