Poll- What Weight Oil do you Use?

5.7 2012. I am running 5w20. @97000 milesNapa synthetic. The gray bottle. Use 89 chevron gas.
No towing. At 5000 miles oil getting darker but rub between fingers and not gritty. Still very slippery. Mechanic told me that cam advance uses oil pressure, so not to change to 5w 30.

The pressures have been like between 1 to 2 different between 5w20 and 5w30. The difference between hot and cold oil can be much more. We have guys running 40 weight in the 5.7 w/o issues, not my choice but they are doing it.

Its really kinda funny how everyone freaks out about oil weight and not running 20w oils in the 5.7. ( I see this on Facebook all the time)
The 6.4 calls for 0w40 and I do not see any reason you can run 0w40 in the 6.4s and not in the 5.7s, both use the same mds lifters.
Then you have the 5.7s in the 2500s that also call for 5w30 weight oils.

The government is the only reason it is speced out for 20w to meet fuel mileage demands that they have set on the auto manufacturers.

take some web cam video with audio on both oils if you don't mind. It will likely take 500 miles for the redline oil to be at it's quietest-moly plate takes time, heat, pressure. Curious how loud your engine is??

That sounds like hemi tick to me, what oil/filter are you running now I forgot? Your stock manifolds are gone so that has to be lifter tick.

It sounds great when I get into it, def happy with the exhaust note. lol

Flowmaster Super 44, shorty JBAs, K&N on the intake side with ported TB. The 5 inch tips really woke it up to be honest.

Right now running PUP 5w30 with a Boss Purolator filter. Soon to be RL 5w30 and RP filter.

I never had HEMI tick before the cam/lifter swap. I'd love to think changing oil and filter combo might quiet it down a bit. I notice zero performance loss, it runs solid. I just don't want to damage anything after dumping $5k in parts and labor.

Here is the thing, what has happened here at Ram forum defy's logic and nobody is more blown away by the results more then me. Most people still don't believe it even after hearing from different and random members have reported a near 80% success rate at Redline 5w30 paired with a rp filter killing hemi tick. The science says this oil is different then anything you will get on the shelf, but it is still hard to believe simply using a different oil can eliminate that sound. There is no guarantee, 20% of the time it doesn't get the tick. But I think you have a legitimate shot, you have to wait for the moly to plate, do not be upset until you have at least 1,000 miles on the new oil.

Now, they say that set up is louder, so I don't have the same confidence as usual. But I'm kinda excited to see if there is the possibility. Thanks for giving it a shot.

One thing you might try before you change the oil, get the 15 ounce size lubegaurds biotech. This is the same science of redline, just less of a % of it when added to a full oil change. If that was my truck that is what I would do, try lubegard and see if it changes the tick, and regardless go with the 5w30 redline/rp combo. keep us posted.

Well I sent the vid to Matt at Moe's and he said very clearly it's not normal/too loud. Working thru it with mechanic and Matt...stay tuned. We'll figure it out but I think my problem is bigger than oil at the moment. Grrrrr......

That's an exhaust leak. Run a smoker up the tailpipe and you'll see where it's coming from.

That would be great if that's all it is. I purchased OEM gaskets to be installed with the JBAs when the heads were off but mechanic used the JBA gaskets. I've read the stories so I understand. I cringed when I picked it up and he hadn't used the MOPAR gaskets. We may give that a try. Thank you.

No problem. Check the collector gasket first. It's also not a bad idea to retorque while hot. Let us know what you find.

I'm honestly hopeful. The sound is only coming from the from driver's side area too towards front, nothing from the passenger side at all.

It pulls hard as hell and doesn't feel like anything mechanically is wrong with the motor. I watched some vids with leaks later last night and that sound is more similar vs. metal on metal carnage internally.

Yes, JBA shorties were installed at the same time. Go figure....

Saw my exhaust guy this morning and we put it on the lift. BOTH ****** JBA gaskets are leaking less than 2 weeks being installed, approx 700 miles on them. It took him 10 seconds to diagnose.

The motor is solid and literally nothing from the valvetrain. Whew......

He's going to pull them, mill them flush if needed if they are warped and reinstall with oem gaskets and high temp RTV that he uses on his nitrous cars.

I'm really ticked off at JBA and their poor product. Their headers were installed exactly per instructions and torqued to spec while the heads were off the motor! The install situation couldn't be any better than that.

I ordered from Moe's and I've already reached out to Matt to see what my options are in seeking some reimbursement for the poor product.

At this point I wish I had never even bothered with the headers. The end cost will never be worth the small gain.

I've never had a set of headers that didn't have leaks at some point. No matter the brand or price. For the most part, factory exhaust manifolds don't leak if you use good hardware and torque them properly. I hope your exhaust guy torqued them while hot, at least at the collectors, or it'll come right back. Glad you found the problem! Much less expensive than the valve train for sure.
