Hello,

Looking at a 2015 Ram 5.7, 6 speed. It is a quad cab 4X4.

Have had Mazda \ Nissan \ Ford \ Chev, never a Ram.

There is 60K miles (100,000) KM Canadian.

Has not changed Trans \ any of the diff fluids \ transfer case. Nothing other than oil change every 5000Km or 3000M.

Looking at some posts, Ram Tick, tranny issues, did not see much for diff issues.

Anyone have any insights into this particular year? good \ bad \ neutral?

I have also read that the 2011 \ 2012 5.7l are troublesome? Did they fix these woes by 2015?

Other than mileage, is the 6 speed a better \ worse trans than the 8 speed?

Any insight would be great.

Thank you !

The 8 speed trans is definitely superior, personally I would look pretty hard for a 8 speed and 3.92 axle. The difference in transmissions isn’t highly noticeable but I would definitely want the better trans if I was making a purchase of that size. You can always go find a 6 speed and an 8 speed at a dealer, and test drive both.

If it has 60k miles, that isn't a detriment to the diff fluids and transfer case if they ahven't been changed unless it was driven super hard and never changed but still. That's great mileage to just have those done after you purchase it. The 6 speed with 3.92s I think are supposed to be a great combo. The Lifters changed in 2016 i think but as long as you run a really high quality oil like Redline 5w20 or 5w30 and Royal Purple 20-820 or 20-500 filter or Fram XG2 filter, every 5k miles you'll be straight. Recommend sending oil sample to Blackstone after your first 5k miles so you personally get to see the condition of that engine and adjust from there.

I thought that ZF 8 speed transmissions were put in Ram 1500s in 2013 or 2014

i don't know about the 4 wheel drive Ram though

Thank you RodRamCar. I am taking notes, as my '15 Ram 1500 Laramie with under 40,000 miles will be delivered to me tomorrow.

Valvoline makes a killer synthetic diff fluid with limited slip additive. You can find it at most your auto part stores in the squeeze bags.

I think both were available in Canadia eh

I second the look for an 8spd. If budget allows, I’d immediately removed 6spd from my search.

The 8 speed is a smooth trans, no doubt.

I was gonna ask the same.
Didn't ram goto the 8 speed in 2013?
Did they still offer the 6 speed overlapping the 8 speed?
Dial shifter vs steering, console shifter a way to know?
No clue bout the 2-4 wheel drive.

Canada was FCA's dumping ground for the 6 speeds, they were still available up till either 19 or 20 with a 6 speed up here.
OP don't get hung up on needing 3.92's,the 3.21's with an 8 speed work perfectly fine, and you'll find way more 8 speed trucks with 3.21's then you will with 3.92's.
If it's a 6 speed truck, they definitely benefit from the 3.92's though,8 speed not so much with it's stump pulling 4.71:1 first gear

Thanks for the insight on this. My son is looking at a Ram as well.

We will keep all of these items in mind.

Cheers!
I have 15’, it has been very reliable, no major problems.
Mine is an express, so less options & no rear window but perfect for me.
Good luck with you search/purchase, tons of useful info & great members on this forum!

I agree. In fact, the 3.21s can still easily tow a 6k lb dry travel trailer really well. I'd definitely prefer 3.92s for towing

The upgraded lifters were introduced mid-year 2014 as a rolling cut-in.

Ram first introduced the ZF 8-speed as standard equipment with the Pentastar V-6 in 2013. Later in the model year the 8-speed was available as an option on the 5.7.

Why recommend the 3.92 gears? He didn't mention towing? Just curious

If you like the truck and it seems to drive out fine, what the heck? See what kind of money can will let it go for? On any vehicle there can and will be problems. It sounds like you're doing your homework though and that's about the best you can do ...good job!

Well...
1) In the second half of 2024 the recession is finally here. Some say it's already here, but the official word from economists is that it will happen in the second half of the year. I can already feel it. Anyway, if that happens as predicted, you'll be able to get a great deal on just about anything.
2) You can install your own 3.92 gears, but it will be more work if it's a 4x4.

What do you suspect will happen? And what are economists saying exactly? As in, dumb low interest rates/discounts or just one, or both?
