I want to put ppf down before I do my fender flares just to protect the paint. My question is can you use 2 3" strips to get 6" or is it better to use 1 6" strip? Only reason I ask is I need 30" high and 28" high for the flares and it's cheaper if I use 6" pieces instead of 1 30" piece.
Thanks!

I would agree that you more need the protection where the flares touch the paint. Sure it will get dirty under them but nothing with be rubbing that area to be of concern.

Buy clear ppf roll with a thickness just wider than the contact patch of your flares

Temporarily place the flares and bolt them up

Take bright and thin (so it’ll curve easily) painters tape and use it to mark the outer edge of your flares

Remove the flares

Put the ppf on the inside of this painters tape line

Remove painters tape

Permanently install the flares and all the pets of your flare that contact the truck will have a buffer or ppf underneath it and it won’t be visible since you did such a good job of marking the flares with the painters tape

If you zoom in on my 1st pic you can see the clear ppf is already installed

All I did after that was take the green tape off and install the flares

The roll of Expel that I bought curved just fine

I can’t remember what width I bought though. The thicker you buy I’d assume the less it’ll curve. I think mine was 3/8?

I just installed factory flares 2 weeks ago, I did it the way JB1 and rwhjr did it. I used 1” Expel and have the 2 sides tape sticking to the ppf. It curved around the wheel well extremely easy!! Much easier than I had thought it would.

I also ran a strip on the inside lip, where the flare screws on. I had to buy a 100’ roll, so I had plenty.

You wouldn't happen to have the link to your eBay materials would you? My front clip is covered but I wanna do whole truck, ppf is crazy expensive, I'm assuming the 100ft eBay roll was considerably less then Xpel??

If you do the whole truck it's going to get reallly expensive. A friend here in Austin that does it for a living told me he just finished a Rolls and the total was almost 10k.

I can get the link after class (in class while writing this) but a 48" x 150' was around $85 if I remember correctly

Maybe if I used name brand I could probably do the stuff for about $3500. Less if I could find the film in big sheets ABC's then I could use my vinyl graphics machine to cut them exactly the same size

I think a lot of the commercial places have some sort of program for their cutters, they enter the exact vehicle and then the body panel and the cutter cuts the PPF exact for that panel.

Yes, that's exactly what they have. Many shops subscribe to software providers and pay on a monthly or yearly basis. That way they get the most current updates for new vehicles, kind of the same way body shops get their collision estimating software.

I've watched my friend work putting the PPF on and it looks like an art. IMHO nothing easy about it. I think that correct installation is about 90% of the job. He clay bars the entire area twice before installation and then use a wipe on the surface.

I got it off Amazon, that was the cheapest I could find.
