Looking to buy new 2500 but I see they now recommend premium gas. Has this always been the case for 6.4 hemi engines? Do you all with 2020's run premium? Thanks

I think the manual for my ‘19 says 89 or higher. I choose to run premium all the time though.

I ran 87 on my 2018 for a year and it had problems did not run good I traded it for a 2019 and only ran 89 and never had problems.

I wouldn't buy a hemi either engine if your not gonna run 89 it will destroy it.

My friend has a 2018 his has had injector problems and something else he was telling me the same thing 87 but now regrets it

It’s like $3.30 a gallon. But I only go 3 miles one way to work. I normally ride my scooter to and from work. Lately I’ve been driving though cause it’s been 110 plus for the last 3 weeks.

I run 93 in my 6.4, it’s only $2.29 here. I also get better fuel economy on 93

This is really not rocket science. Octane is a measure of resistance to pre-ignition and nothing more and this has not changed in the past 100 years. The higher the compression ratio of an engine the more prone it is to pre-ignition or knock.

Now with electronic controlled ignition there is no "knock" evident as the computer automaticall senses and ******* the spark ignition point to protectd the engine. With 89 octane gas the ignition is advanced further than it can be with 87 octane gas and so there is more power and better fuel economy.

With my own cars that preferred 93 octane gas the savings from purchasing lower octane rated gas was lost with the resulting decrease in fuel economy.

Octane rating as it measures resistance to pre-ignition of the fuel when it first hits the insides of the cylinder, is not linear.
Mixing a 50-50 mix of 93 and 87 octane gas does not result in 90 octane fuel but something in the 91 to p2 octane range in terms of its resistance to pre-ignition.

Add up all the costs of ownership of purchasing and financing and insurance and tires and brakes and service work and repairs and you will find that gasoline purchases are not that great a factor and having to pay an additional 10 cents a gallon is not worth worrying about.

Folks pay an extra $5,000 to $8,000 for a diesel engine and they may save a few pennies but only after 100,000 miles of driving. With my 2500 diesel the fuel purchases were roughly 25% of my costs of ownership and there was no recovery of the higher costs for the diesel engine.
