Hey all, I have two trucks:

2011 RAM 1500 Outdoorsman

2011 RAM 3500 ST

Thus, I have 4 keys. Two keyless entry FOBS, and two egg shaped RFID keys.

I want all four keys to work in both trucks... Is this possible? I know you can add up to 10 keys to a truck, so since the keys are just RFID emitters couldn't you just tell both truck to accept the RFID frequencies W, X, Y, and Z?

Also, does anyone know if once you program a key, can you re-program it to a different truck? The dealership says once a key has been programmed it can never be re-programmed which makes absolutely NO sense.

One last question, can you have both an egg shaped key, and a FOB programmed to one of these trucks at one time? The dealership also thinks this is impossible.

This is how I feel every time I talk to the service dept at my dealership: :Grenade:

i don't know if it's possible to have 1 key operate multiple cars. If they did, wouldn't you think dealers would be doing it?

As far as reprograming a key.. i would think that is a security feature because if that did happen, then theives would be doing it. They probly use encryption on the keys. Once it's encryped to one specific type, it will only work with that device.

I am not sure I understand. You think someone is going to steal someone else's key, and then re-program it to their own vehicle?

To do that you need the vehicle's PIN (assigned at the factory), and the Technician's equipment.

You can buy an un-programmed key BTW.

And it would make perfect sense for fleet vehicles, that is the basic application I have here. Ten trucks, ten guys, ten keys...

im pretty sure it's doable in a technical sense, but would it actually be done? In a large scale (like at a dealer) i can see this being a practical application, but i don't think it would be something that would be a home use situation only because it's 2 trucks but the idea of that happening would be kinda scary.

I don't know about you, but just because it's a personal thing, it would't stop there. I would not want someone from the dealer still having my key for my truck. Then how about that knowledge from a discruntled employee leaving and being able to do that.

Just think security..... and not ease of use here.

The dealer could still have programmed another key to your truck, or even right now, a disgruntled technician could come add a key to your truck. Assuming that someone knows your PIN, you should be worried (i.e. any disgruntled technician).

For you, it makes no difference, but from a fleet perspective, think a large concrete company that uses chassis cabs for hauling forms, or an electrical company that has many different service trucks. It would make a huge convenience factor, and would have 0 impact compared to the current level of security your truck has.

Sounds like I am SOL. Oh well.
