So beginning of this quarantine i decided to pick up a 2001 Ram 1500, 5.2 auto 4x4 off a buddy of mine. its been sitting in front of his house for god knows how long and I've never personally seen it run he said he tried fixing it but eventually gave up and got a 4th gen cummins.

So my issue, dude said the 46RE blew on the truck, it ran before he parked it for said reason and when i picked it up i never tried to fire it up to verify that it runs or the trans was bad (took his word like an idiot). i immediately sourced a 42re off a 5.2 Dakota from the junk yard, popped that bad boy in hooked/converted everything over to work through in a new battery and tried to firing it up before putting all the fluids back in. Nothing. now I'm stuck.

Made a list of everything that's going on for easy referencing
-Fuel pump turns on when you turn the key
-all the lights and electronics turn on
-P0601 code was scanned (he said he had that code when it ran)
-starter relay doesn't click, starter doesn't engage
-swapped the starter relay with other relays i have and still doesnt engage

Does the trans need fluid to engage the neutral safety switch?

Do i really have to swap the ecu to get this bad boy working? and if i do does it have to support the 42re or can i get away with a stock replacement that supports the original 46re?

Much appreciated yall.

Good news everybody! so got the truck running and driving.

jump started the truck through the fuse block (starter relay) and quickly remembered I forgot to put the oil filter back on :Stupid Me: after some clean up I did an oil change and put trans fluid in the bad mama jama, jump started her again and drover her around the parking lot.

I still cant start the truck with the keys though. The ignition switch is sending signal to the relay, and the park/neutral switch is brand new so does anyone know how I can test the wire's and the sensor (to make sure the transmission is actually "communicating" with the sensor) would love a little help
