Hello all .
I have 2001 1500 sport 4x4, 5.2.
46re trans. can I do a straight stock trans rebuild and reuse the stock selectables? I ask because most rebuild kits do not include the selectable shims, and if I need them I'd like to have them on hand. Would like to stay under 400$ on the rebuild kit,
I'm rebuilding because my tc is stuck in lockup, and by the looks of the very fuzzy magnet and a piece of aluminum in the pan, I'd say she needs torn down.
Thanks for reading.

I have reused the stock selectable shims over and over in many rebuild. I have done it with warranty overhauls and customer pay repairs as well. Knowing wether or not your clearance is acceptable comes with experience. Use your best judgement and inspect them to make sure they do not have any burn marks or uneven wear or even bent.

When you tear this unit down make sure you replace the overrunning clutch at the rear of the case. The aftermarket calls it the sprag. In the dealership we call it an overrunning clutch as it is a one-way design. It allows the rear clutch retainer to spin in one direction but be held stationary in the opposite direction.

Also, replace the direct clutches in the overdrive unit. These clutches are under incredible spring pressure because they have to hold during every gear operation. There is a special tool required to stack the clutches and clutch plates. The special tool is a shaft with splines that you insert into the overdrive unit and you stack the clutches and align the splines before installing the clutch retainer and spring.

These are the special tools used to compress the spring in the overdrive unit and stack up the direct clutches...
