So I intermittently have a Serv 4x4 message on my dash I've used it only 2 or three times just to get over deep snow. Is there anything common and simple that can cause this? Will an OBD2 tell me more? Or does this need to go to the dealer for diagnosis?

Welcome to the forum. This is a pretty common complaint and if you use the search function here you'll find a number of current threads on the issue.
You can swing into most parts stores and get your codes read. There is likely a stored code. U1440 for example.
From what I've read, there is an e-connector on the transfer case that gets fouled up. Wet/dirty or corroded. Pull it apart and clean it up and see if that doesn't cure your woes.
