Hey folks, I have a 4th gen 8 speed 5.7.
It recently started making this ratcheting sound while cruising or slowing down while MDS is on. Almost sounds like a baseball card in the spokes of a bicycle as soon as I select a gear manually, the noise quits. The noise changes with speed. I had the tranny completely rebuilt 18 months ago. The had to rebuild the torque converter and pump as new parts were not available at that time. That was also 60,000 miles ago. The truck has 230,000 miles on it. (Not kidding, 2014 lol) the noise just started after a hard launch about 2 weeks ago. Any ideas?

I noticed a similar noise from my hemi recently. Member Tach-Tech mentioned cam phaser in another thread. He described mine to a T. Not sure if it will cause damage but I’m going to look into it. Tow/haul mode in the meanwhile.

I have the identical problem with my 2011 ram it started at 90000 miles I now have 129000 miles and the noise is the same as the day it started from everything I have read over the past couple years it's the MDS system making the noise and replacing the solenoid should fix the problem I haven't had the chance to try it yet ill repost if I do

so my truck has 150k miles on it and I just started to get the noise you describe. has anyone looked into the fix? I have read many posts on it and is described as the MDS and yes if you select 8 with the gear+ button the steering wheel it does not show up. My question does anyone know how or what is needed for an actual repair? I understand that many folks on this forum just say to disable the MDS... but seems like something is going to break if I keep doing this... what do you guys think

My truck started doing that 30,000 miles ago. I turned off the MDS with a tune and it's been fine since 0 noise. I now have 211,000 miles not even a cam problem yet.

I've read it's the spring in the phaser that changes tension when MDS is on.

sounds like better off just turning off MDS... since I already have 150k miles on. some of the tuners seem pretty expensive to just turn off MDS... is there an "economical" version?

found the Diablo Pulsar... seems like a good option... but still begs the question. My truck just started making the noise so obviously something changed / broke... should I try to get that fixed?

I do not think I could handle living with it making noise ,I would have to know for sure what is the source . Would be concerned something let’s loose .
