Hey all, happy New Year!

Long story short, I drove about 1500 miles around Christmas, circumnavigating Florida. From central Florida down the west coast, across the state, and back up the other side.

So in the process of this I developed a water pump leak. Caught Covid at the same time, so I used my Covid time to replace my water pump, hoses, and thermostat, all OEM and everything working perfectly.

My vehicle is an early 2004 regular cab Dually, with the 5.9 Cummins and the auto transmission. All stock.

I’d noticed leaks from around the upper radiator hose a couple times, nothing serious.

Never any concerns about head gasket issues.

Anyway, I have an older radiator cap on my truck, OEM part number 05278697AA - this is the OEM 16lb cap.

So I looked up the part, and it says that it’s not the stock part for my truck. My correct radiator cap is part number 4596198 - this is a 17lb cap.

As far as I know I’ve been doing ok with the 16 pound cap.

Is there any downside to going up to 17 pounds?

Does that increase the chance of blowing a head gasket?

Anyone with an early 2004 Cummins using this strange 17 pound cap with the plastic top?

Appreciate any thoughts on this one, thanks in advance.
