Want to get in my truck this morning and noticed a gas smell. Didn't really think anything of it as I had just walked past the gas cans for the lawnmower and dirtbikes figured maybe one of the lids got left off. Pull out of the driveway and in my rearview mirror notice a puddle where my truck was sitting. Get out and look and sure enough it had a semi circle chunk broke free. I'm sure I didn't hit anything as the tank is free of any scuffs or dings. It almost looks like one of the casting injection spots just randomly blew out. I'm about 99.9% they aren't going to warranty it but should I try anyways or am I just out the $600 Dodge wants it's for a new one.

Well.

Since you need a new tank now is the time to buy an oversized one.

I would absolutely not replace it with the OEM.

Get a bigger one!!

Looks like something took a hard road bounce into your tank.

No way from a rock bouncing off the road. Those tanks have a high resistance to any kind of puncture like that. You could smack it with a hammer and it wont puncture.

Doesn't seem likely to me either but it's clear that's impact damage in the last pic.

OPs third pic almost looks like someone started to drill the tank with a pilot point bit and stopped.

buddy of mine had a 6.4 2500 military vehicle they were using on a job in Oregon. someone drilled the tank for gas. so it does happen.

Looks like its countersunk, like it punched out, vs in
Definitely what I was thinking. kind of hard to tell from the pictures but the little flap that blew out is still there and you can like lay it over and it perfectly fits in there no way was that a puncture from something as it should have poked in not out and it's definitely not from a drill bit because the little flap is there it's almost like the plastic was defective when they cast it and just popped out

Seriously, thats what I was thinking.

It was kinda tongue in cheek, but I have used that stuff as a last resort for some crazy stuff and it always amazes me. My buddy had a built to the hilt big block chevy motor that had groove where a pushrod had worn his head. It would slip off the rocker arm at inopportune times, so he built it up with JBWeld as a temporary fix and 60k miles later it's still "temporarily" working like a champ. I'm guessing you'd have to drain the tank so it's dry when you apply it, but it couldn't hurt to try....you know, temporarily. :)

i used JB waterweld to repair a plastic gas tank on a wood chipper, its designed for use on plastic fuel tanks. would be a good temporary fix, should be available at home depot.

I'm going to take it to the Ram dealer in town and complain and see if I can get it warrantied. the more I think about it there's no way that's from a rock chip. the trucks only a year-and-a-half old with 20,000 miles I feel like the tank should be a little more sturdier than that for a rock to chip a chunk out of it so easily

I agree that as unlikely as it is... it looks to me like it came from the inside out.

I had the exact same thing happen last year...gassed up on my way to the shop-no issues but when I got there the gas was pouring out...my “puncture” was near where yours is and perfectly round..... maxxcare doesn’t cover it and I couldn’t find a larger aftermarket tank option either (6.4 3500) so I too was stuck with an overpriced/undersized stock replacement when I really want a 50+ gallon option
