03 2wd rear was leaking at the pinion seal then stopped. Over time it's been feeling like it's starting to slip and occasionally can smell the gear oil. I guess my question is, is it a better idea to rebuild it or just replace the whole rear? It's a 9.25 with 3.55 ratio.

Rebuild it. A junkyard rear may be cheaper, but it’s like a box of chocolates as Forrest Gump said “ you never know what you gonna get!”

Might save yourself some grief if you put some gear lube in it until you do your rebuild.
