This is my first post, I'm new to the forum (and mechanical and electronic work in general) so forgive me if I'm in the wrong spot. I did search threads but I'm not seeing anything that may be able to answer my question.
We've got a 2014 1500 express with a 5.7 hemi. It broke down, no oil pressure. We've been working with a mobile mechanic and have replaced the intake manifold (oil leak), map sensor (issue with the lock on it, it would not plug in and click), cam and lifters, timing set, oil pump, oil pressure sensor, battery, and I believe there are a couple of other sensors that have been replaced. It's been worked on on and off for about 4 months, the battery has been disconnected almost the whole time. We replace all this stuff and it still won't start. Mechanic says our modules need to be reflashed because the battery sat unplugged. There is small potential we burnt out our starter, but we trust our mechanic and are fairly sure that's not the issue and it's just the computer.
We've called around to a few mechanics, found one who will diagnose and do all three modules. We are really trying to avoid the dealership because they sold us the lemon in the first place. However, we're military affiliated with base access and there is a self service center on base you can take your vehicle to and they have bays and equipment/tools you can rent out and I'm calling them this afternoon to see if we can do it there and save us the $600 we were quoted for reflashing the modules when we've already sunk a couple thousand into this truck. The self service center would only cost us about $15 an hour, our insurance is covering the tow, and we just sign out equipment if we break it we buy it but we don't pay to rent it.
What I cannot figure out is what type of tool we are looking for. Is it just a scanner that can reflash modules? If they do have it, is this something we can figure out ourselves and works similar to a code reader or are we better off spending the $600 at the mechanic? If we need to spend the $600 we will, I'm just wondering if they do have the right tool to do it if it's worth giving it a shot ourselves.
