Hey guys, I'm thinking about retrofitting my headlights myself. Never done this b4 so I had some questions, if u could either answer them or point me to the right direction that would b awesome. I'll try and post a pic of what I wanted to do to them to.
I have a 2017 ram 1500 with the projector headlights and Ive got a hid kit put in.
I wanted to add rgb halos, and clear corners instead of the Amber ones, and im thinking about going switchback led boards.
They r already black and I wanted to paint all the inside stuff white.
I also have a headlight shop taking the clear part off the headlight for me and revealing them for 300. He quoted me 1040 just to do the halos so that's y I'm thinking of trying to do it myself.
I was wondering if anyones ever done this b4 how hard was it?
Was it hard to wire all the stuff?
What brands did u use?
What kind of paint did u use for the headlights?
Did u have any problems?
Would you recommend anything? Or tips?
Thanks20181212_075553.png

One thing I have learned from my first retro is I never retrofit the stock housings (just a suggestion) Being without headlights while I tweaked and messed with it was never an option. Also, the stock permaseal is really really hard to get apart. Aftermarket is usually a lot easier to pull apart. I am doing something similar to you in the near future and already plan on getting aftermarket housings (stock replacements) to work on and keep my stock for when I need them. That 300 would almost cover your housings FYI. The rest is really up to you. Wiring is wiring and you can pick and choose when and how you want things to light up generally. If going LED projectors, head won’t really be a problem, HID will require high temp paint just to be safe. Get on YouTube and watch some videos. You will be surprised at how easy most of this is. Just takes some time and patience.

I just cracked open 4 headlights for my first time a couple weeks ago. Round 1 was the oem, was hard and I broke a tab in the process. Realized I needed it in the oven longer. Round 2 on oem, cracked it open with ease and no problems. Round 3 and 4 with aftermarket, cracked open real quick and they were easier than Round 2 with the oem.

It is a bit unsettling putting headlights in an oven for the first time. I'm comfortable with the process now. Wirh that said, you could screw something up your first time around.

As @Spud2388 said, watch a couple videos, get yourself prepared with everything you need and tackle it without hesitation.

What I did:

245 on the oven
Light in for 15 minutes
Have gloves that are conforming to your hand and will protect them. Make sure you don't have a special relationship with the gloves, they might get jacked up by the butyl.
Have all your tools and workplace ready to rock and roll.
Follow all the other small, but important steps you see in the videos.

I started my headlight build using OEM quads. I went 225 F and let them sit in the oven for 20 minutes.....was able to get them open. Had to re-heat both of the headlights to make it easier.

It's not hard, just have some patience. Permaseal on an OEM headlight is a *****, but once it's heated up, it can be moved.

I have a thread on my build in the DIY section.

I have someone taking them apart for me and then resealing them for me. He's probably one of the best guys in the city for it. Other places I've talked to recommended him when I was asking them about doing this.

I can use another vehicle while I'm waiting for these.

And do u by chance have a link to the diy?

Everyone is different. I tried mines twice and it was a mess so I just decided to contact a professional company to do it. I did it with hidretrofitkit.com they have a few several designs already done but I know they can do anything you want just in the way you want them. Contact them and here is their link if you need it

It’s not extremely difficult just time consuming.. I would buy a set of tyc replicas first never retro your only pair of lights it takes time to do it right where your 100% satisfied, replicas are still easier to open even though in this case they would be sealed with permaseal which you have to have patience with or you’ll destroy your housings trying to open them.

If your going to go through all that trouble customizing them make sure you throw in a better projector!
