Looking for opinions on these patterns. Setting up a 11.5 AAM with Nitro gears. Backlash was 5-7 thous for each pattern below.

I went with the 54 thousands pattern and took her down the road, but I was getting whine under load or acceleration only. Decel was dead quiet. I'm thinking that means pinion depth is too shallow so I started increasing depth but I'm not getting a clean pattern off these gears. I took a major jump from 63 to 75 just as a sanity check, which shows too deep.

I'm leaning towards the 60 thous.

I think 54 looks the best.[emoji2373]

Not sure what to say.

I agree with you guys that's why I went with 54, but she was noisy. Just under load, accel.

It's not as deep as can be based on centering between root and crown, but the shape starts to look odd when I go deeper. Instructions with the gears want a centered symmetrical pattern like 54.

More and more i hear that Nitro gears make some noise a bit. Regardless of the setup.

Mine do on deceleration. And every once in a while I can hear it at other times.

The guy that did mine is extremely well-known in the area for doing a great job at it and I saw his patterns on mine and they looked phenomenal.

Realistically anywhere from 50-60 looks like it would be fine. I’ve seen some iffy gear patterns that were still quiet.

If the backlash is still in spec, it’s likely the gears itself.

I think the 54 looks a tad shallow to my eyes. The 60 looks good but I can't quite see the root. Maybe paint it on just a little bit thinner because it gets pushed towards the root and makes a little ridge that obscures the root. The 54 looks real nice painting-wise as I can clearly see the root that is why I think it looks a bit shallow.

PS - The other trick I used years ago was to use a divider, after getting the pattern, to make tiny marks in the "paint" half way on the length and depth of the tooth. Helps visualize where the middle of the tooth is actually located.

Over the years I have found that some manufactures' gears make more noise than others, no matter how well they are set up. Also I have found that any gear ratio from 4.10's and lower will, by comparison, make more noise than say 3.92's and higher. In the past(distant past) I have had ratios from 4.10, 4.56, 4.88, and 5.13's set up by the manufacture, Getz Gear, a highly regarded gear company, and the gears still made noise. I have decided that if your get them as close as you can, it's sometimes just the nature of the beast. This is just IMHO

Here's the wear shown in the gear with the 54 thous shim, which whines. About 30-40 miles on it, two short drives with cool down. Looks shallow if this corresponds with the paint.

My factory 3.73's that were taken out looked like they wore as shallow as what you are concerned about.
