Rpm's

Tonight when I was driving to the store, less than a mile away, I noticed my RPM's dropped down to 800 to 1000 while coasting at 45mph. I never noticed this before as I have only been a Ram owner for a little over a month. The temp is starting to get cool at night, about 39 degrees at the time, don't know if that could factor into it. My past vehicles would usually stay about 1200rpm under the same speed and conditions. No dash lights or messages came on and the vehicle seemed to be running normal. Is this a problem or the beginning of a problem?

Haven't experienced something like this in the rams I've had. Definitely seems odd though. I would maybe try the key trick and see if that pulls any codes.

I'm driving the 07 to work today and the 11 this afternoon. I will try to duplicate this with both.
I am also betting on MDS.

The MDS ( Mulit-Displacement System) cuts the engine down to 4 cylinders under light load or cruising conditions to improve fuel economy

I don't believe my 4.7 has the MDS. Glad of it too. I had an 07 Silverado that had that and I could not stand it. Did not seem to help gas mileage at all and made my exhaust sound like ****.

your 4.7 does not have mds. Only 5.7s in 2006+ 1500s have it. 2500s do not.

If you have a hemi, it was almost certainly the MDS. Can't believe your dealer didn't tell you about it. basically helps to save gas. When the truck starts to go int MDS mode, you might be able to hear a slight difference in the exhaust tone. Think there's like a light on the dash or something too. Can't remember, been away from my truck for about 6 months now : (
