runs fine..smokes bad

I have a 96 that has been very little trouble for the last 2 years but recently I got it stuck in a waterhole and since its been smoking badly..heres the symptoms...
was not underwater but was up to bottom of block
didnt overrev trying to get out..but was in for haf the day before rescue
no water in oil or oil in water
no loss of oil or water
no abnormal noise coming from engine,idles fine
had some oil pressue loss at idle on way home but hasnt done it since
thick white smoke w/the smell of oil

my first thought is to yank the heads off and replace the gaskets but I dont want to untill I've heard some other possablitys first.

ideas or opinions...chime in

Welcome to RF.

With the smoke being white, you are burning oil some where and it could possibly be leaking oil and/or it's leaking out and burning off your exhaust manifold... I would think you might have to yank the heads off and check it and flush your oil as well, have you checked the oil pan gasket?

Id say you simply ran too much water up your tail pipe. There's no cracks otherwise you would find water in oil or vice versa. White spoke can also mean water. It doesn't have any type of blue tint does it

To verify the engine do a compression test and a vacuum test and if both come out find then the engine is not damaged. As for white smoke it could of been steam blowing from drying out the CAT and muffler.

thanks for the repys...since it has 207000 mi on itI decided to refresh it up anyway with a new ring kit...and so far I havent seen any obivous damage to the heads,gaskets or rings...mopart mite on to something there but since I've never soaked a muffler and cat I have no Idea how long it mite take for them to dry out...hopefuly by to time I get it back together. I'll let you know how it turns out.

UPDATE...I have finally finished with the engine work,got it started and guess what ..it still smoked the first day I had it running, but didnt smoke the next...so I'm guessing that it was the cat or muffler.

The smoke could have been from fluids making its way into the exhaust during the rebuild after you finished it up. Its not to all uncommon.
