I'm in the market for a security/ remote start system. Mainly security since I have to park my truck in some not so great areas for work every once in awhile. What are you guys running or have heard good things about?

dei, compustar, autopage, audiovox.

i have had them all/installed them at a shop setting. All have their ups/downs they all offer different features.

Since all alarms/remote starts need a bypass module. you can control aftermarket alarms/remote starters from the factory FOB. i would look into doing this, then getting a cell phone module so you can get notifications on your phone or have functions from your phone.

what it really come down to is the features you want. price.

just keep in mind that you can have the cheapest alarm out there with a good install and have no issues or you can have a $1k alarm with a bad install and have lots of issues. do your homework on the shop also.

The Compustar system with the T-Harness is a super easy install, and a great alarm.

directed 5x10. easy enough to install yourself, uses the factory remote, smart start and 2 way compatible if you choose, not all that expensive either.

depends. get the t-harness and its almost plug and play.
its getting unit flashed with the software for your truck that can be tough. some ebay sellers will, but not all.

do you have the manual for it? it tells you exactly where to get it at.

otherwise google 5x10 and go to the directed site and you can put in your truck and it will give you the instructions.

parking light wire is optional but its nice to have, imo. i believe i grabbed it from the BCM since thats what the directions outlined, but you could grab it from behind the switch.

how come? the alarm is pretty much plug and play. it should somewhat function without having to splice any wires.

I looked into aftermarket alarms after I got my 2500. From what I can tell they do the same as what the installed system does.

Am I wrong?

to an extent, yes. but an aftermarket alarm gives you the ability to add extra functions you might not have, customize setting, added security, shock sensor, etc. biggest thing for me is i forget to lock my truck sometimes. factory alarm is useless in this situation.

To go off of this also, not all factory units are actually alarms also. some are just keyless entries but sold as "alarms".

Also for the remote start part range of an aftermarket unit can be 10X that of a factory (remotes only not smart phone apps).

Thanks,
Do you know of a system that disables the engine? Or is that really needed. I have the RF(?) type key that you insert and turn. I don't know if those are easy for a thief to override and get the truck started.

I used to have a manual kill switch and hood lock on my Dakota and I loved it. It was old school but a thief probably couldn't figure it out.

This is what the manual says the installed alarm does:

"The Vehicle Security Alarm monitors the vehicle doors
and ignition for unauthorized operation. When the Vehicle
Security Alarm is activated, interior switches for
door locks are disabled. The system provides both audible
and visible signals for the first three minutes the
horn will sound and the headlights will turn on, the park
lamps and/or turn signals will flash and Vehicle Security
Light will flash repeatedly. For an additional 15 minutes
only, the headlights will turn on, the park lamps and/or
turn signals, and Vehicle Security Light will flash."
