Hey guys!!

So recently my truck started making this noise at startup.

I had (and still have) a feeling it’s related to the Serpentine belt and one (or more) of the pulleys? Because I felt like I could “hear” the noise coming from that area. Also, I noticed my belt was kind of chewed up on one side.

I just replaced the Tensioner and the Idler Pulley, and the Belt….but still have the noise.

Any thoughts of n what it could be? Am I way off by thinking it’s related to the belt/pulleys?

You need one of these very soon before you have a catastrophic failure.

This will allow you to identify the bearing set that is tired and about to grenade.

Idler pulleys, bearing sets in the waterpump, alternator or HVAC compressor are all potential points of failure.

Also check the water pump? i had a noise from mine ( bearings) before it started leaking. Yes, that stethoscope is a great tool. And yes, anything run by that belt could be suspect.

Good call. I just had a coworker hook up their code reader tonight and I got a code for the coolant bypass valve….that seems to be related to water pump issues so might be on the right track….

Based on noise, year, and belt wear pattern I would first suspect the water pump.

Hey guys! I had to go go out of town so haven’t had a chance to take care of my truck….

But right before I left I noticed that one of the mounting bolts for my dang alternator was missing!!!!

My stupid ex replaced the alternator for me when it died a few months ago and I guess it was fine at first, but eventually started rattling.

I replaced the bolt and the noise stopped right away…..

But im still kinda scared to drive the truck now because….

I should note that right before this happened….

Well a couple weeks before is when the noise started….

Then it randomly went into limp
Mode — no other symptoms before the limp mode (other than the noise).

This is when I had someone check the codes and they pulled a code for the 3-way coolant valve. (I never had any issues with temperature or heating/cooling) before this…

Could the 3-way coolant valve be related to the alternator mounting bolt missing and the alternator being loose, and shaking — maybe it cause a loss of power to the the coolant valve, making the sensor go crazy?

Or could this be a separate issue?

Since re-mounting and tightening the alternator clearing the codes, rhe 3-way coolant valve code hasn’t come back (but u haven’t driven the truck much other than 5-10 minutes around my block).

But I’m scared of driving it farther and it going into limp
Mode again!!!

Based on noise, year, and belt wear pattern I would first suspect the water pump.

Dusty

I think it’s really nice of your ex to replace your alternator. He may have left a bolt loose, but he still helped out. Stupid????
