Hello.
I have a 2014 Ram 1500 5.7L sport
8 speed Transmission
I'll see if I can't explain this clearly.
So, I developed a couple leaks on my transmission oil cooler lines that run from the cooler to the radiator. I lost quite a bit of fluid and the truck was not shifting well. The damage was from, what I noticed, the lines rubbing on the oil pan. It was missing a bolt that mounted a portion of the lines. So, I bought a new set of oil cooler lines. Drained what was left in the pan. (3 quarts came out).I went ahead and bought a new pan and filter and assembled it, ( just mentioning on this transmission the pan and filter is one piece). Then put in about 3¹/² quarts until it over flowed from the transmission fill bolt hole. I started taking apart what I needed to remove the damaged oil cooler lines. I removed the oil cooler on the drivers side of the transmission, I popped off the linkage that is connected to the metal lever on the transmission. Then detached it from the transmission linkage bracket and let it hang. I was then ready to remove the old lines. I removed them and installed the new lines. I bolted the oil cooler back on and popped the linkage back on the shift lever and mounted it back on the bracket. The shift linkage and oil cooler is basically all I really had to remove and install to pull the old lines out and install the new ones. Now, that I've got 3 quarts in the transmission pan I'm ready to start the truck and go through the ridiculous process of setting the fluid properly. However, this is where I noticed I have a big problem. I start the truck and I have these codes pop up, a message on the dash says "service shifter", no lights on my shift knob and I can not shift it out of park. I'm not sure what has happened! I put everything back exactly the way it was. I didn't take apart any electrical plugs or anything. I imagine 1 or more of these codes might have popped up due to when it was shifting badly on my way home to investigate the leak. However, I had no problem shifting it out of park before I started the repair. Would there be something I have to reset after messing with the shift linkage? I did unplug the battery for awhile after having this issue, to see if it would reset. I'm at a lost and in panic mode. Any help would be very appreciated. Please and thank you.

** UPDATE***
After doing some research. I know now that the linkage on the side of the transmission, that I was ranting about is for that emergency neutral pull cord. So, messing with that, can not be the reason why I have these problems. However, it is still not shifting in to gear but the "P R N D" lights are flickering on sometimes. I'm lost. I'm starting to think this discussion is lost too.

Try another battery disconnect, and leave it off over night , you got nothing to lose at this point in time. Sounds like it's in limp mode ,tomorrow try jacking it up till the tranmission is level, then top up the fluid while the transmission is cold and the engine is running, and see what happens. If you cooked the transmission, and you're looking at used ones, you need a late 13 or 14 8 speed as they changed in 15,and you'd have to swap your tcm into a 15 or newer 8 speed

I went ahead and disconnected the + and - cables for the night. I don't think I smoked the trans because is wasn't driving all the bad when I parked it and started the repair. The odds of my shifter knob going out at the same time is slim to none but I have a new one coming. I'll be over looking all the wires I was working around again tomorrow. I'll try and put more fluid in tomorrow but I had the truck level when I put 3.5 quarts in. The truck starts up just fine but I believe I have to be able to shift gears to pull fluid out of the pan- I'm not sure about that but I would think.
Thanks for the info brother.

You need the transmission level , not the truck. The rear tires need to be roughly 9" in the air to level the transmission.
While it's cold jack it up till the transmission is level, loosen the fill plug, then go start the truck, and while it's running top off the fluid ,and if by chance it'll go into gear , then do the proper fill procedure of going through the gears.
If it'll go into gear, follow these instructions to a "T" don't try any shortcuts. The ideal checking temp is between 100F and 105F , the 122F is the "Max" checking temp, not the ideal checking temp, so make sure you start with a cold transmission.
Step #1 is important ,then follow steps 5 through 14 to a T

Hello,

Did you ever find the cause of the problem/what did you do to repair it?
