Service shifter

Help,

My truck is experiencing a "service shifter" message and at least twice while driving, the "D" started flashing on the shifter and I lost all power. I pulled over to the shoulder, rotated shifter to park and then back to drive, this allowed me to get home. I made an appointment with the local dealer, and they told me that I would need SoftAware updates on the computer module, I questioned the diagnosis, but they insisted that this was the first step. $900.00 dollars later I packed up the truck and before I got out of dealer parking lot, the "service shifter' light came back on. I turned around and left the truck at the dealer, any one here that can shed some light on the fix?

Can not help with the shifter , but find a different dealer . Most seem to lie very often so finding an honest one may require a bit of a drive and a llot of patience . May be better trying to locate a good independent shop , ask everyone you know for recommendations. Dealers lie a lot .

Did they mention what software updates were needed? After I got a couple of recalls done is when I seemed to started having these issues.

Did you end up having it fixed? I have the same issue this morning. Just got my Ram rebel 2025 2 days ago, barely 74 mil on the odometer, all the lights on the shifter went off blinking when I entered the truck first thing in the morning. When I tried to pressure the start button with the brakes, the car would not start and the "service Shifter" warning came on..... completely speechless at this point.
Any tips would help. I am probably having to deal with the dealership now for a possible lemon. or is this a common issue?

How did you find out if that's the issue? is that common for ram?

Check all battery and ground connections you can easily access, there has been lots of loose grounds lately. At least worth a shot , to avoid that dealer visit.

What led you figuring that out? Is that the module under the dash on the passenger side? I would love to have this finally fixed. Everyday is a crap shoot if I will make it through the day without the shifter going out and staying out for longer than an hour.

Also what year is your truck, I don't see that it will fit for my 2017 RAM

Guys, my 2015 RAM 1500 (74,000 miles) started with a shifter error last fall(2024). It was very intermittent, and in April this year (2025), it happened every time I drove it. After a lot of research, I ordered the shifter unit, with the rotary knob and 4-wheel drive buttons, from Mopar.com for $270. It came in, I installed it two weeks ago, and I haven't experienced any more issues. I hope this helps, some guys said you haveto change the valve body in the tranny. Thank God I didn't have to.
