Hello all,
I have a 2016 Ram 1500 with 160xxx miles. Recently we had a cold snap with below zero weather. After work one morning, the truck started and ran fine, no issues. I try to start it about 5 hours later to go to the gym and the check engine light, the ABS light, the traction control light all came on. The screen read “service transmission continue in D, service shifter, service electronic braking system” The truck started and then shut off about 2 seconds later and now won’t turn over. Everything I researched pointed to low voltage which would make sense due to cold weather and a 6 year old battery. So battery was replaced. I left the truck disconnected for an hour, hooked up the battery and let it sit for another hour. When I tried to start the truck, no changes.
I picked up a code reader. It won’t communicate with the PCM, ECU or TCM. I can’t get any codes off of it, and can’t reset anything. I have watched videos and been all through the forums. I have check fuses and everything looks great. I have had zero issues with the engine, transmission until now. I rough idling, shifting issues at all. I don’t know where to go next so any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Sometimes, it's a problem module sending garbage info or shorted canbus signals. Start using the forum search function.

One result (of many pages of results) of searching "service shifter"

Thanks for the reply. I have read this thread already and plan to look at doing some more testing today, but it’s -11 degrees out and my truck doesn’t fit in my garage, so time outside testing is very limited, even when dressed appropriately.

Remove and clean both terminals, then follow the ground and clean where it attaches, continue to follow grounds cleaning and retighten all you can find.

Were you able to ever figure out what fixed it? I live in Pennsylvania by the lakes and we had some cold come through recently and my truck did the same thing. I tried doing some research online and was able to find a few things to try, unfortunately none worked. My radio still works, all the accessories work, truck just wont turn over. I took my battery to an Auto Zone, and although the battery had low power, it still registered as being a good battery - so I put it on a charger for a few hours and the same issue kept happening.

Did you try a jump start? I find that is the best way to eliminate battery issues.
