Probably Elon is buying a ton of Shell stock and telling the board to build charging stations not hydrogen filling stations.. just a guess
Probably the fact that, despite massive infusions of tax money (over $200 million), none of the stations are ever going to make a profit. A hydrogen station is roughly $2 million to build out. There's well under 15k hydrogen passenger vehicles registered in CA. There's simply not enough customers to support any infrastructure. Limited infrastructure then reduces demand for the vehicle, and a feedback loop eats the entire market.
Now add that it's the most expensive fuel per mile. Gasoline, diesel, and electric are all cheaper on a per mile basis for the same type of vehicle, and hydrogen has increased in price substantially over the past few years.
