Should I have went with S&B instead of Vararam?

So I bought a Vararam for my truck in the winter and installed it, and it looks really good and seems to perform well and everything.

But I'm starting to second guess my decision. With it being a completely open filter I'm always paranoid about hitting puddles and water splashing into the filter, or when we start getting rain. But my biggest concern is I drive a lot of gravel so very dusty roads. Should I have went to s&b instead? It just seems like how this intake is setup I'll be cleaning it way to much for what it's worth because of dust.

Thanks

Did you notice a power difference or an mpg difference with that intake? I'm actually thinking of either that one or the S&B but like you I had the same concerns with gravel roads and water.

That will have to be your call.
The only warning I've heard from Vararam vendors is getting snow/slush into the filter. I bought a pre-filter for my S&B for thew snow because of my scoop. Maybe you could do the same for your Vararam?

The Vararam filter is made specifically for that intake, so I am not aware of a pre filter for this unit. The Vararam intake is bringing in more air than any other kit, so the trade off is that it does also get more dust/dirt to the filter. From a performance standpoint, I would keep it. You may have to clean it every 5k miles instead of 10k if you live in a dusty area, but the performance gains are worth it to me at least.

X2^^^ The Vararam made a world of difference top end after my cam/head install. It's a winner. I'll just put the Volant back in during the winter.

I haven't actually noticed any big performance gains yet, but its also been winter so I can't fully take the truck out and test it to it's limits.

I'm just debating because I'll be wondering all the time if km in really dusty conditions or driving in the rain. Its almost worth getting rid of my worry going with s&b then I can go with the pre filter as well.

On my truck with my mods, the Volant was a restriction. Point blank, not a question. Vararam I accelerate, pull harder through 120mph faster. No debate, no questions, noticeable, and timed.

Also I just went through a blizzard with 84mph gust of winds after I put it on 2 weeks ago. I just put on the inside of the grill a strip of nylon screen to cover the grill and side ram snorkels with a couple of wire ties. Not a problem, no snow made it inside to the filter. Took all of 5 mins to find that solution. K&N will also make a pre filter for you, measure the filter and give them the dimensions. Hope this helps.

I'd have kept the stock box and have a heavier wallet.
