Software Update/Nav Map update - anything to worry about or do?

Since my 1500 Laramie is a 2020 I decided to purchase the Navigation. Two USBs are arriving with one being a software update and it says to do that first, then the Nav Map update.

Any issues I need to concern myself with? Any dos/dont's? I assume the truck should be running while I do this but obviously not moving anywhere.

Following. I purchased my 2014 from a dealer in 2017, and I've never updated the original map. My maps are getting a little old even though the system works fine about 95% of the time.

I'm still not sure if I'm willing to purchase a map update when I can use my phone with both Google and Waze as a backup, but I would like to hear about a first hand experience.

I was in the same boat but I prefer looking at my large screen while towing to see my map vs. Waze or Google Maps on my small phone.

I have done 2 software updates this way and the last one was done a few weeks ago. I didn’t have to do the software update since current version was one number off from the version they sent me. So they were essentially the same software version with no changes between the two. I did this with Uconnect on the phone because the software update wouldn’t start when I plugged in the usb stick and I thought something was wrong but I was wrong. I was able to go right to the map update. No problems to report since then. My advice is to follow the directions to the letter! Do the software update first then the map! Make sure you stick to the instructions and don’t skip any steps that apply. If you have any issues call Uconnect and they will walk you through trouble shooting.

I would add, either have the truck running or on a battery tender. All the SW updates I have done seem to always take longer than they say in the instructions. I would hate to be in the middle of one and have the battery die.

The software usb stick didn’t work because the current software version in my truck was one version below what was on the usb stick. So there was no difference between the two and no reason for the system to initiate a software update. The version in my truck was current enough to allow the map update to proceed without issue. Also the truck has to be running to do the update. I just let it run in the driveway and locked the doors. Monitored the truck via my cameras and periodically went out to check the progress bar. Once the map update portion started it only took about 30 to 40 minutes at most. When doing both the software and map update it takes about an hour to do at most.

Thanks - wow, that's a long time to take for an update, and having to run the truck the whole time. Weird how it only took my Ford Expedition all of 5 minutes to update the Navigation system. I wonder why the RAM takes so long?

Because some people like me don't have good coverage after I go 10 minutes from my house. Yes I can download the maps first, but what happens when I didn't get the correct maps, because I had to go to another area? I was in AZ last Nov heading from Yuma to the Grand Canyon, I am glad I had built in Nav because I didn't have cell coverage for about three hours of the drive.

I like to keep everything updated and I use both nav systems depending on location and cell coverage.

Here’s the site where you get the updates free of charge. you put them on a USB stick from your laptop or home computer and then stick them in the USB socket in the center console. It does take a while. I put my truck on a battery tender while it was taking place.

As long as you're not using an older Apple device with a USB-A connection, such as an ipod gen 1.

Apple stopped supporting Interface Accessory Protocol (iAP1) years ago, but your old Uconnect software may not know that until you update, then no more Apple legacy device connections will function.

That’s only for 2022+ rams with Uconnect 5.
OP has a 2020 with Uconnect 4, so must purchase the map updates.

I can't use the Android auto because my Android phone is no longer able to plug in via USB connection and has to do everything wirelessly, including charging. U-Connect 4 doesn't support wireless. So I'd have to buy a new phone. Plus I've not been too happy with Google Maps or Waze lately with regards to mapping, routing, etc.

UPDATE - everything worked just fine. I already had the current updated software, unbeknownst to me, so after 15 minutes of that USB stick blinking away it told me that. So then I did the 25 minute map update and it worked out just fine. I still don't know why it thinks my Home is on the opposite side of the loop of my street 3/4 of a mile away (it did this before I updated as well - weird) but I know as I get close how to get home. Very odd.

I don't put my real address in my on-board Nav. I use and address about two miles away, just cause, if they steal my truck they will be at the gas station trying to use my garage door opener.

More than likely your home address was put into the map database wrong. You can actually edit the map database that Uconnect/HERE uses. I have done it for the area/neighborhood where I live since it’s been under construction. I’ve seen those changes I made in a previous map update.

damn...here i was all excited about a free update, until i got to uconnect 12.5. Unfortunately for me mine is a 12.4

Like Mlarv5 said. Don’t put your real address as your home location in any of your NAV systems, including your phone. Put your local police department parking lot or Denny’s or something a few blocks away from your actual address.
