Just bought my first Dodge and when driving it home I realized (after the purchase) that the speedometer wasnt working. Pounded on the dash and it jumped up but not to nearly what I was travelling. Several more pounds on the dash and it inched up... basically it sticks and wont go up or down reliably without pounding the dash, though it would loosen up over time but hasnt. Since the dash pounding works dont think its in the wheel sensor... if I take the dash off can I get to anything? Spray electrical cleaner in it... suggestions???

If it goes up and down when you beat the dash, the sensor should be fine. Sounds like the needle is sticking. Or electrical connector is loose.

Tore into it today. Pulled everything apart and the needle was rubbing ever so slighlty agaisnt the face of the dial. Weird, wonder how it got that way.... any way, i had to plug it back in with ignition on so it set the pin to the right tension, the stuck the needle back on ... but not all the way so it wouldnt rub anymore... lining up with 0. Seems to have worked, but thats really weird.
