Want to put a truck camper in my 2016 RAM 3500 4-door, long-bed, 4x4, Cumins, 6-speed manual truck. Weight will be at capacity. Will probably sell it and get the same truck with DRW, but have toyed with the idea of applying the conversion to the existing truck.

Anyone done a conversion? Is it worth the effort?

Why not just do 19.5s? A dual conversion doesn't change the gvwr of the truck that was set by the manufacturer.

It CAN if you have the truck re-certified, but you have to find a place that will do it.

That said, I don't know how easy such a conversion would be. You'll need the dually rear axle (I believe it is narrower than a SRW?), hub extenders for the front, some kind of fenders to cover the duals (or a new box, since IIRC Ram boxes in '16 had already changed to the integrated dually fenders), and all new rims all the way around...and that's just a minimum. Not sure if people have done this on such a new truck.

FWIW, I vote to just buy the set up you need. Lol ike a chain that is only as good as it's weakest link you don't want to have something fail in a trip and at best delay you and at worst cause damage or injury. As listed above there are a lot of parts to consider and a lot of work. You could post in camper forums, maybe someone bought a dually but ended up not really needing it. I have seen that before where someone over bought and is tired of parking hassle, you might work out a deal to trade. Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies.

Have decided to strike the SRW—>DRW conversion. Swapping rims and tires to 19.5, adding a helper spring and sway bars, and swapping out for heavier shocks is still on the table.

Of course selling/trading the SRW for a DRW is probably the best option.
