stalling, backfiring

5 speed manual transmission
3.9 liter
Motor changed approximately 5 years ago(junkyard motor)
Symptoms-
Bought Truck recently, drove fine several weeks,
stalled backing out of driveway one morning, took several minutes to start back,
stalled moments later, started immediately with a back fire, backfired 2 more times.
Ran clear for about 4 miles. Stalled again, took several minutes to start.
The same afternoon the truck drove great for around 10 miles, parked the truck.
Started the truck after a ball game, stalled moments later. Took 10 minutes to start.
Stalled and started immediately moments later, stalled within a mile again took 10 minutes to start back. Ran great for trip home.
Replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotor.air filter in good condition. Ran great one day, next day stalled again with 10 minute intervals between restarting.
That afternoon would not start. Sounded like it tried to fire once or twice but wouldn't start. Pulled spark plug, plug had gas on it. 3 more stalls on the way home.

It almost sounds like your fuel pump is going out. Either that or the fuel filter is clogged. The ethanol they put in our gas now a days is killing trucks. That junk causes all kinds of problems.
It could also be thrash in the bottom of your fuel tank clogging up the "sock" or "strainer" on the bottom of the fuel pump. This will definitely cause you some stalling and back firing.

I will drain the tank this weekend, see what comes out. I know that the plugs were certainly nasty. They needed changed. The distributed cap was corroded a lot also. The if I don't find evidence if trash in the tank, I will replace the fuel pump relay. I've had a few of those go out on me. Maybe I will be able to avoid dropping the tank. My wife is steamed because she wanted me to buy a newer truck because of the inherent problems with older vehicles. Only a few weeks after purchase it breaks down. Needless to say, life is getting difficult LOL.

Well I siphoned the tank out Friday, removed approximately 8 gallons after using the hose to stir the tank. I found no evidence of trash in the tank. A friend brought a scanner by the house Saturday. We plugged it up and pulled the codes. 4 codes for random misfires. A fuel pressure gauge showed steady 50lbs. I am going to run seafoam through next to try and clean the injectors. Sound like I'm on the right track?
