Ok so my 06' 5.7 hemi 1500 has a weird issue when starting.

Here's the story - every morning I go out and start my truck no problem then go to work. The. 8 hours later I come out to go home. I turn the key and it just tried to turn over for about 5 seconds before catching and starting...then the rest of the day if I need to leave it starts fine. Occasionally it will happen intermittently but not as regular. Anybody no what the hell is going on?

Battery, starter and alternator all test fine. Fuel pump relay is also good with no burnt out fuses.

Also I can start my truck and remove my key or start it with a flat blade screw driver don't know if that might be relevant or not

Pleas help!!!

It sounds like its not getting fuel. Next time you turn the key and it doesnt want to start I would check to see if there is fuel pressure at the fuel rail. Have you tried checking for codes? If your fuel pump is going out it usually won't throw any codes but will just suddenly stop working.

It keeps throwing "evaporation leak (very small leak)" for the check engine but nothing else

Check underneath the truck at the front of the gas tank, that is where your evap canister is. My guess is that there is a cracked or loose hose.

This video was taken by my wife and shows exactly what it's doing
Ram hard start in the heat. Please help me!!!! - YouTube

04 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi. Hard start only after an hour or more in hot sun or after refueling. Plus after a refuel it stalls if you don't jump up the RPMs. It has a brand new fuel pump and on this model the fuel filter and pressure regulator are built into the pump. I have code that says small evap leak. I have no idea what is causing this. None of the injectors are visibly leaking but as you can see it acts as though it's flooded

What the heck is the loud "BONG" noise when you let off the gas pedal in that video?

I'm pretty sure that's my arm bouncing off the center console

LOL. After listening to it again, it's more clear now that it's the engine starting.

So when you turn the key it won't start until you hit the gas pedal with the key still turned?

That is correct

I put in a new fuel pump when I did my rebuild and about once per tankfull (usually when it's about half full) mine will do the same thing, I'll have to pump the pedal to get it to start. The needle for the fuel gauge is also very slow to rise after each fill up. There was a member here who recently replaced their fuel pump and the new pump ended up being defective. I'm starting to think this might be my problem as well since I'm not getting any codes.

I replaced the fuel pump in the hope that it would solve this issue. I suppose it could be a second defective fuel pump but that seems a bit unlikely doesn't it? Plus I have good fuel pressure at the rail

Then I would think something with the Evap system. I've seen many threads where if it happens after topping off the tank it's likely the vent on the top of the tank is letting fuel into the charcoal canister. You could also check the purge solenoid under the hood in front of the battery, there shouldn't be any fuel in there either.

Two different trucks with the same problem after the pump was replaced.

I would say that the pumps were either installed incorrectly, or they didn't seal correctly after the install.

I'm guilty of replacing pumps, and then finding out they didn't seal correctly. It doesn't make you any less of a mechanic. Sometimes they just don't seal correctly, and they have to be taken apart again. Then put back together.

I'd also get under those trucks with magnifiers to check every evap line for the smallest of holes. Most dealerships can perform a smoke test on the system. Which will find any, and all leaks. Not sure of the cost.

I think I'm going to have to eat my pride and take it in. That sucks but oh well
