When they replace the column do they replace everything from the wheel to where the steering shaft connects?

Does it sound like a zipper? Some guys on other boards experienced the same issue and found issues with the PS pump and steering gear to be the issue.

You might get under it and have someone turn the wheel lock to lock to try to isolate the source.

That I don't know. But, I lubed the U joint first thing before I ever brought it in. It didn't remedy it.

Now that it came back after the replacement, I stopped by the dealer today. They said they'll contact an engineer and let me know, but that I'd likely have to live with it since they've already replaced the column and that it's not hindering the function of the vehicle.

We'll see.

It makes the noise even with the truck off. It's definitely inside the cab.

I'll bring it up if they have me drop it off again for inspection. But, to my knowledge the whole column was replaced. They could not find a defect on the old one, but agreed there was the noise there.

Wow that’s awful. Do all your steering wheel buttons work? Did they replace the wheel with the column?

Yes all of the buttons work. I'm not sure if the wheel was replaced.

Have contacted the dealer and Ram who's going to escalate the case to a specialist. Don't know what that entails really, considering it was replaced and still an issue. I'll keep everyone updated.

I need to go into the dealer service shop for a prepaid oil change and I will get them to look at my steering column too. I will post updates when I get feedback from them...

Apologies for not getting back sooner. I ended up NOT taking my truck in yet for service due to the corona virus stay at home orders. However, the clicking sound is still present. I am confident that the sound is coming from near the steering wheel region of the steering column assembly. This would most likely mean the CLOCK SPRING is making the noticeable noise. The noise is present whether the vehicle is running or turned off. All buttons on the steering wheel are functional. The loudness of the clicking seems to get louder when the temperature is hot inside the cab. I don’t notice the noise much early in the day when the temperature is cooler (~50 degree F).

I will be taking the truck in for oil change and to check on this noise. When I get further information I will let this post know.

Clock spring would make a lot of sense. Wouldn’t surprise I’m RBinNC’s case if they replaced the column but reused the steering wheel assembly.

I'm glad you said that as I've suspected the same....worse when cab is hot.

I made a star case. A lot of calling and legwork on my end, but I have another appointment at the dealer, at which point Chrysler will step in.

I had this clicking in my steering, last year. Might not be the same as reported here, but they originally replaced the steering column, and when that didnt work they replaced the steering gear. That fixed it!

Noise/feel never came back.

Steering gear...hmm...where is that located inside or out? Did you watch my video so you can confirm it's the same sound? Really important info if that's the case, I'll let them know Wednesday when I take it back.

Hmmm. Googled it I see that's the external steering at the base of the shaft. I doubt that's it here....sounds like it's right behind the airbag on mine. Definitely inside. But I am curious still, if you had the same sound.

Took a vid for you guys. Note that the truck is off (it does it off or on).

Holy crap. Yeah that's not what mine is doing. Mine is a single click or thump felt in the steering wheel when turning either way from dead center.

Ok, that’s not the same clicking sound I get. Yours is more of a creak. Mine is. Single click, like the mechanical release of the turn signal stalk. And mine only does it maybe one or two times per full rotation, but it always does it in the same spots.

Yeah mine was more of a click that you could feel in the steering wheel. Seemed to only do it while moving the wheel slightly at slower speeds. Almost felt "loose" if that makes any sense?
