So I just had my truck in for broken exhaust manifold bolts on the driver's side. I got back home and noticed some steering wheel slop that I'd never noticed before. There seems to be some take-up before it "grabs" if that makes sense. Along with that there's an annoying squeak in the slop area.
My question is, could they have adjusted something or disconnected the steering while they were in there that could be causing this? Maybe something didn't get tightened all the way? I would love any feedback or experience you have with this.

If the slop is normal, any ideas where that squeak could be coming from?

Here's the video:

It's not normal. They surely disconnect your steering shaft to remove the manifold but they mess up with it while reconnect it.

Any idea how to fix it?

*Edit - After some more searching I came across this video and sure enough there was a bolt on the steering shaft that was super loose. It was barely even in...(you can see how far that bolt is sticking out)

Tightened it up and the problem is gone.

Here's the video that I found that pointed me in the right direction.

Hi bryce88,
We recommend having your dealer look into this for you. If you would like any additional assistance, please feel free to send us a private message and we'll be happy to help!

LOL - Apologies in advance, I know this is out of line, but wasn't the dealer the one that messed it up in the first place?

Haha yes it was, I guess I didn't specify in my original post but yes it was at my local dealer and they fixed the manifold bolts under warranty, and didn't hook the steering shaft back up correctly.

And no, I won't be taking it back to them for this, too much hassle, plus I already fixed it.

I would have called the road service we have while under warranty, had it towed to the dealer and let them fix it.

Yeah I guess I could've taught them a lesson but it just isn't worth my time...

Mat not be a bad idea to call the service manager and politely let him know what you experienced. Hopefully he'll have a little chat with the tech to try and prevent something like this occurring to someone else. Who knows, this may not be the first time and this guy just doesn't belong working on cars. Just think if it was your wife and kids in the car, and it was something really important, like brakes or steering. (yes, there is a hint of sarcasm there)

Yeah that's a good point. To help prevent it from happening to someone else and prevent something more catastrophic from happening. Maybe I'll give them a call.

What gets me is the fact you posted here and had to watch a video, before you could see the problem.Whether it's a tech's fault or not,you should of been able to see that just by looking. The powers of observation are wonderful, next time try employing them before you kill somebody.
