My son had his 06 2500 4x4 5.9 automatic stolen last week. It was recovered without the key present, and towed back to town. It was towed with the rear wheels on the ground and the driveshaft not removed. Is this a problem? Thanks

One would hope they at least had it in neutral. I do not know if the transmission interlock that puts the trans in neutral was around for a 2006 2500. If they just towed with it in park from the front one would think they at minimum snapped off the parking pawl, or hopefully towed it from the rear with the rear off the ground. At worst who knows what damage, really depends upon how they towed it. All just IMHO, internet guessnosis at it's worst.

Your son needs to go out there and start it up, and run it through it's paces and see if he detects any issues, and work from there.

Any damage from the theft will be a separate issue. Wondering if we have the potential for transmission or transfer case damage that we need to discuss with the towing company when we pick it up?

If the tower was competent, all they needed to do was put the transfer case in neutral. Is it electric shift or the floor lever?

How do you know it was towed wheels down and not dollied? Hard evidence, or just worst case assumptions?

If it was towed wheels down and the transmission turning, being in neutral won’t save it. The pump runs off the transmission input shaft. Without the engine running there’s no lube.

I flat tow a 2500 all the time, so I’m familiar with the requirements.

My son has video of it going into the tow yard with rear wheels on the ground and driveshaft in it. It is a floor shift t case. Just curious if t case in neutral is enough to prevent damage. Seems the internet is full of conflicting opinions. Shocking I know

Transmission or transfer case in neutral is just fine...vehicles have been towed this way forever
If the rear wheels were turning while on the hook,it was in neutral
If the truck was locked with no keys, the tow operator would lift the front of the truck, then disconnect the transmission cable from the shift arm and shift it into neutral by hand and then shift it back into park/reconnect the cable once it's at the tow yard...towing 101

OH Heck yeah... Find out if: As far as damage, try not to let on you are looking for some type of relief till you have the facts and check out the truck. Because either the Tow Company will BE UP FRONT and talk about it being checked and paid for by the tow company plus any relief from damage or they gonna clam up and GONNA take a lawsuit.
1) At a minimum, find out how the truck was towed: Ie., classic front lift, rear wheels on ground, status of transmission shift lever?
2) If available in 2006, find out if trans was put in neutral condition?
3) Truck towed from the rear with rear wheels up? (this would be ideal)
4) Truck towed from front with rear wheels on dollies (old school)
5) Truck towed up on flatbed: Now the issue there is I have seen many vehicles put on a flat bed, but pulled up there with the tranny in park.

Gonna take a lil snooping by the OP.

ALL ABOVE IMHO.

IF they cared and did this. That is the question.
